Impromtu Dinner with Michael Jessen - 96 Champanges and Red Burgundy Dinner (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown): I have had a number of the 08 DRCs, no RC of course, and they seem to be quite open and ready. For me, they seem to show almost tertiary like flavor profile. Perhaps it can be attributed to noticeable stem note which, combined with the typical 08 vintage fruit expression, gives very exotic notes a la cannabis. Exotic nose displaying ripe a bit dry red and black fruits, stems/green that adds complexity , cannabis, Vosne spices, mushroom, white pepper and milk chocolate. Good concentration, silky palate, ripe fruit palate expression and nicely integrated tannins. Very enjoyable already but it will be interesting to observe in ten years when the stem quality gets integrated.
Second time I had this wine within two weeks. I'd be happy to hav this wine everything forthnight for the rest of my life. The quality is so apparent and no matter how great the preceding Malconsorts from Cathiard was, this is a significant step up. Stellar RSV.
DRC Dinner 2 (Sydney, Australia): The fragrance of this wine immediately enthralled me, there was cinnamon, beautiful floral notes of rose and violets, liquorice, five spice and a whiff of incense - it would be difficult to be more appealing to me. The palate is exceptional as well, with wonderful purity and lift that is supported by a set of fine tannin. Balanced, textured and seriously long, this was one of my top highlights of the tasting. Others at the table that I spoke to were not quite as enthusiastic but I am more than happy to go against the trend here.
