Popped and poured at a Cali Cab dinner. Mostly tea leaves on the nose for me, with a little spiced fruit, with a little time a bit more fruit showed up on the palate and still had nice balance.

I am amazed that this first year vintage can still drink 37 years later. Upon corking, a barnyard of odors hit you fast but soon dissipates to reveal the slightest bouquet of fruit and yes, some vinegar, which is not totally surprising considering that this cab was in its prime 10 years before. We did not find any brick like others have seen and the tannins were barely noticed. With the first sip you can taste a bit of vinegar but you also have unexpected fruit, mainly dark berries. After letting the wine breath a while the berries become more predominant along with hints of licorice and ripe bing cherries. The longer it breathed the better it became. Overall, few wineries could give birth to a vintage that would age as well as this first born cab.

I have tried this wine twice in the past five years. One bottle was passé, the other was delightful Napa Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dinner at the Papies (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Time took the better of this wine and was just gone. Such a shame..

Weekend in Minneapolis; 8/17/2018-8/18/2018 (Various Locations): Keeping with the theme of the night this bottle too was corked (and really badly so - this was not a question in any way). Sad since I was pretty excited to try.
