Again another wine that should have been consumed long ago. Lacking the freshness and fruit that was so appealing on release. I'm beginning to think these wines are best upon release.

Meeting (of) the Parents; 5/12/2012-5/13/2012 (Cambridge, MA / Lincoln, RI): Nose: Tropical Fruit, Lemon, Olive Oil?, herbs and minerals. Palate:]Viscous/Waxy palate feel, that is rich yet balanced. Nice tart pineapple, meyer lemon, green apple and some guava notes. Touch of butter here but not intense, and some more nuanced herbal notes. Finish: Long and lingering pineapple, peach, mineral and diesel with a bit of heat. The label says 14.7%, but they seem to be using some wiggle room here. I agree with others that this has many characteristics of a Rhone white. Definitely an interesting chardonnay that does not follow the traditional formula. At $60 I would think twice about this however.

Wine Club: Epic Syrah Smackdown (The Abarnment): Popped and poured. Really delicious - pear-driven fruit, great acidity, heavy but integrated oak. Blind, I never would have guessed Chardonnay - this tastes a lot like a white Rhone blend, heavy on the Viognier. It has a few of the same trappings - a slightly oily texture and a bit of heat, but for being a bull in a china shop, it's delicious. Ready to drink, would definitely last longer.

Motley Cru does Off the Beaten Path (San Marcos, CA): The most atypical of the three Chards, most people thought there was a heavy Rhone influence. While there is a bit of Viognier (<3%), I would have guessed Marsanne or Roussanne instead. Got better with air, and I'd guess will improve with another few years of age, and probably has some durability as well. Waxy, dark yellow fruit flavors, with a hint of petrol (hence the Rhone thought). Good stuff. (PE: 91)
