  • Stewed, rotten fruit on the nose upon opening. Stewed, rotten fruit on the nose after an hour’s decant and throughout the bottle. With the Ponsot iconic status growing, it was all the more disappointing to encounter such a terrible bottle. Very little fruit delineation , and an acid balance that was off. I was asked if it was corked — not with the synthetic cork of course. Pretty color, rich viscosity, no pleasant flavors. Surprisingly bad grape selection.

  • This is about as bruiser of a 2008 as it comes. The nose is very dark, with clear black fruit notes, and none of the crunchiness nor the floral prettiness of so many other wines of the vintage. But the density of this wine serves it well, with the lightness of the vintage adding an acidic kick to an otherwise very ripe and sappy pinot noir. This seems to have developed some more earthiness since the last time I tasted this wine.

  • This is about as good as I remember it being. The nose is extremely dark, with some brooding earthy characteristics, as well as plenty of ripe black berries. A heavier pinot, the riper style here does very, very well with the lighter 2008 vintage, adding heft to the wine, while retaining most of the brilliant acidity. This is one of the darker 2008s that I've had, and truth be told, this doesn't fit into the mold of the vintage very well. But as a Burgundy in and of itself, this is excellent.

  • Initially over-chilled, the wine was closed and showed only earthy characters with mineral. Warming up a bit it became more expressive and delivered red fruits flavor. Wine is reddish brown in colour, no tannin and residual alcohol is minimal. Rather light-body but not silky. It's a good wine but not delighting. Drink well now.

  • One of the darker 2008s I've seen. This has an extremely pungent and powerful nose, with a great balance between ripe fruit (think sweet black cherries) and a lot of mulchy, earthy, mushroomy funk. The palate is just as dense and powerful as the nose -- a real sledgehammer of a wine, but the high acidity allows it to maintain some real elegance as well. This is on the verge of developing some umami character. Perhaps one of the best Clos Vougeots I've had in a while. This doesn't show very much 2008 character at all -- there's none of that bright high-toned transparent and crystalline red fruit. The tannins are somewhat coarse, but they'll come around with time. I'd never be able to peg this as a 2008 blind. But it's sure as hell phenomenally good.
