  • Complex nose, brooding dark fruits, soil, alcohol, hints of stewed red cherry and wood. Medium bodied, upfront acidity keeps it fresh and lively. Fine background tannins with ample fruit and green brambles. Balanced overall with a solid core of fruit, primarily black and some red. Not much polish here, black plum, black and red cherry come to mind, violets too. Solid wine although a bit hot, core of acidity seems a bit unnatural considering the fruit profile. For my palate this was more enjoyable in its youth. Important to let this breath an hour and serve a touch cool to tame the heat. This wine and producer are a textbook example that you don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to get good California juice that is age worthy. Fine powdery sediment in the bottle. Served with a grilled ribeye it was a good match. Purchased from distributor and stored accordingly. Drink now… Na zdrowie

  • See my 6/29/12 note. Consistent, but I think the wine has evolved a bit more and really is now in its prime. Drank with nothing more than a pour through a vinturi. Deep, dark red, almost black in the glass, like a petite syrah. Wonderfully elegant bouquet of dark red fruits, Autumn flowers, some moist tobacco and a background of vanilla. First glass was just a touch tannic and tight (I always like to try the first glass straight from the bottle, without aeration). Every glass thereafter until the bottle was finished was very good. On tasting you get a classic, rich Cali cab fruitiness, without over-extraction. When done right, as was the case here, there is almost a sweetness to the fruit. Long and lingering. Drank well by itself, and with the prime beef filets we had grilled. On top of its game, and I think there is every reason to believe it will not fall off any time soon. Nice job, Davis!

  • This wine really does define balance. On the one hand, particularly as it opened up, there were such wonderful, powerful red fruiits. Very Napa in nature. On the other hand, these fruits did not overpower, and there was still an elegance and structure about the wine, with some pronounced, but fine, tanins apparent. This wine is a good example of the 2007 vintage: drinking quite nicely early on (with nothing more than a pour through an aerator), while at the same time having a real likelihood that it's worth cellaring and letting it age. The color was also deep and beuatiful, it had a classic cab bouquet, and a nice mouthfeel. I have 5 more bottles in the cellar, and I think I will wait to come back to them at least a year (well, I'm going to try: best of intentions, etc.).
