  • Second bottle from a half case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2011. Pristine condition, perfect level and cork. Five years ago to the day (almost, I am one day short), I opined that this is a very good Corton, and that it would be better in five years'time. I am not sure that I was right. Looking back, the signs were there at the time. The power and warmth of the terroir (a prime site on the Corton hill in Ladoix) are clearly noticeable, there is fine concentration without much rusticity, the tannins are finely grained but chewy, freshness and minerally energy are excellent, but there is a clear lack of ripe fruit. It comes across as sinewy rather than generous, and the limestone is palpable on the dry finish. Aromatically it is in a nice place, with tart berries and hints of nutty evolution, but structurally it is big and foursquare rather than charming or elegant. I don't think I will keep my remaining bottles too long - it will last but it will not improve.

  • Poured clear and aged. Nose to die for. Light medium palate. Red fruit, cherry and raspberry. Then smoke, sous bois and a most welcome touch of the farmyard. Intensity was medium but quite persistent. This stood up well to steak and dauphinoise. Second day, rather disjointed and thinner. Should have kept at in on the first day but it seemed too good to waste once the table was cleared. I’ll learn from this. And seek out more.

  • Nicely done. This one was a bit suspect as the label was all whited out from the lights of the store I bought it in. Pretty complete. Ready to drink like most '08's I've had recently. This is awesome to find elegance in the Cote de Beaune. Really high toned, and graceful. Medium + body but not in a rich way. Fruit and tannins are very well integrated. Right place right time. Delicious.

  • Decanted for two hours. Recently, some wine critics have been saying that the 2008 Burgundies are developing much faster than originally anticipated and this caused me to open a few good bottles from that vintage, like this one. Almost entirely primary nose, fresh and deep, just starting to develop some tertiary complexity, nice hint of spice from the wood; tight and youthful palate, fresh and bright, cool and mineral, the cranberry and blueberry flavours have excellent intensity, well-judged oak adds a touch of warmth, good tannic grip, but there is very little fleshy comfort; excellent flavour persistence, long finish that is just starting to unfold its peacock's tail. Impressive, large-scaled. Not elegant but focused and powerful. No rush at all - better in five years. Drink now - 2028.
