  • Opened 4 hours prior to drinking. Upon pouring it had a very strong cheesy aroma, like soured milk. It was dense and acidic on the palate and wasn’t very enjoyable.
Two days later, the cheese went away and it was much nicer but not great. Felt like a winemaking flaw to me, perhaps a bretty bottle?
In any case, time would do it good.

  • Nose: Earthy, meaty, gamey, bacon fat, mint, hoisin sauce, tar, cherry, smoke
Notes: the minty nose to me shows a distinct Mazis terrior which is one of the very interesting characteristics of this grand cru. This wine is complex in the nose but shows both signs of closure yet its is accompanied by secondary or even a little oxidative nose of tar and hoisin sauce. Therefore it is very hard to determine whether this wine is too mature or too early to consume right now or whether it is one that shows bottle variation. I remain confused after tasting this highly rated yet peculiar wine.
Drink: ?? Unable to determine this time. My gut feeling tells me this is a bottle facing bottle variation but I can't be sure.
    Rating: 87

  • (Mostly) Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Hughes House - Chicago IL): Opened and double decanted three hours before serving. This was my star of the flight, particularly for its density and overall sheer power. Ok, not the more elegant Grand Cru, but so much here that is ready and easy to enjoy right now.

  • 2005 Burgundy blinds on Jason's roof: Served blind in the sense that I didn't know what was being poured in my glass. This is made in a plusher style and has a lot of concentration, and I didn't notice any "Gevrey funk" - it's a very clean wine. It had solid dark fruit and a reasonable finish. Honestly, given the producer's reputation (and my previous experiences) I expected much more of a California oak monster, but this was a solid wine even if not quite my preferred style.

  • This wine shows surprising richness and balance for its year with a dense dark cherry colour and a nose of dark fruits, game and spice with touches of earth. The palate has some modern glossiness but equally has plenty of depth and a nice touch of finesse on the finish. The fruit is particularly rich with lots of interest and completely balances the earthy gaminess of the vineyard. A delicious wine tonight but with plenty of room for development.

(MAZIS CHAMBERTIN Bernstein) Grand Cru Burgundy Dear Friends, Last week’s Mas de la Deveze offer led to a surprising number of requests for Olivier Bernstein's 2008 Grand Cru red Burgundy portfolio. As noted last week, not only does Olivier produce some of the Roussillon’s top entrants but his passion for Pinot Noir led him to produce what is arguably the most acclaimed portfolio of the entire 2008 Burgundy campaign. This classically styled vintage came to life under Olivier’s direction and his naturally made wines are something to behold. From Burghound to Tanzer, rarely has verbiage been this passionate (especially from Tanzer who is not prone to hyperbole, especially with his favorite region). With access to rows in each Grand Cru that are among the very best of the best, the deftly bottled results are stunning to say the least. How he managed to acquire fruit of this level is still bewildering for old-timers in the Cote de Nuits as many of them have tried for decades to acquire even one of the parcels that he now calls his own. Yes, the wines are VERY expensive but so are a host of other wines in the region and Olivier’s are potentially the best of the lot. I realize he is a relative newcomer but you’d have to taste the wines to fully understand their grandeur and reflection of site place. If you collect the finest red Burgundy, the 2008’s from Olivier Bernstein have longevity and cerebral complexity in spades. The flavor spectrum and display of mineral tone on the entire parcel makes a number of more famous wines (from the same vineyards) appear to be from lesser fruit. As always, try to decide your preference based on the verbiage and not the scores – all of the wines are stunning. If you purchase D’Auvenay, Dugat-Py, Vogue or others, this set is every bit as good and many of you will prefer the wines for their power aligned with an uncanny transparency that makes the hair stand on the back of your neck. Olivier Bernstein: “We'll see how the wines turn out but in my mind there is no question that we were working with better raw materials in 2008 than in 2007. The '08s are classic Burgundies and I like them a great deal because they speak so clearly of their origins. None of the '08s resemble one another, which is really why Burgundy exists." I’ll toast to that. All are directly from the Domaine cellar with perfect provenance: 2008 Olivier Bernstein Bonnes Mares - 2008 Olivier Bernstein Clos de Vougeot - 2008 Olivier Bernstein Mazis Chambertin - (unfortunately, the winery will not allow orders only for the Mazis and/or Clos de la Roche – this entire parcel is coming directly from them so we have no control over the allocations and pricing. If you would like Mazis or Clos de la Roche, please try to at least one of the other wines and they will more than likely oblige your request – JR) 2008 Olivier Bernstein Clos de la Roche - 2008 Olivier Bernstein Charmes Chambertin - (this wine is particularly amazing for Charmes – JR) All are EXTREMELY LIMITED To order any of the above: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to depart the cave – it will arrive in the summer (please check OARS for local pick up after Aug 1st).
