Mature black fruit with leather, braised meat and savory spice with good depth. Slightly more mature than I expected at this level at this age, but much better vs my last bottle (lots of reduction in 2012). I experimented with both Zalto Burgundy and Conterno Sensory stems here, and slightly preferred the Sensory glass, which showed more balance with slightly less earth. While Zaltos often let wines shine, I sometimes find they highlight every minor flaw.

Great bottle of Burgundy in a great spot, and a textbook Nuits, too. Starts off with a big whiff of woodspice, but it doesn't take long for the oak to melt into the wine. The last few 2008s I had were starting to curl up in their shells so I have stayed away for awhile, but this is drinking really well and is generous and fleshy, even though it's mellower and without the inky saturation many '09s and '10s are showing now -- I really love the mouthfeel, which combines plush and ample fruit material with very refined, cashmere-soft tannins. The flavors are past the primary already and as much about gamey, savory flavors as fruit, which makes this incredibly succulent and makes me keep reaching for the glass. Really a ton of personality here. This is exceptionally classy too, especially considering it's a village wine, but apparently it's not really a village wine because it combines both the village and 1er portions of Damodes (well-placed, too, above Boudots). Glad to have stumbled on this.
Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. This was a real disappointment vs. how well it showed when tasted shortly after release. Dense, meaty but seemingly reduced and shut down. Too firm and structured on palate with somewhat coarse tannins. Needs a decade+ in cellar or a long, long decant. Not given enough air this afternoon, but it showed as an 80-82 point wine to me today.

So good. Leather, dried fruits. Concentrated cherry.
Not dark. Perfect Nuits St George.
