Magical mature Burgundy aromas of smoky dried black cherry, potpourri, mulch, steeped dried porcini and spice. Good concentration of mature, plump fruit with seamlessly integrated satiny tannin. Magical nose comes back for an encore in the finish. Bravo.

Drank at our 1988 grand cru tasting this week. slight hints of herbs and french brie on the nose, more ashy and sweat sox like but not flawed just reticent to open up, lovely and sweet black cherry fruit on the palate, rich, tasty, great mouthfeel, the taste was the same for about 90 minutes, then showed its age, medium finish. 3 to 5 years more but at its peak, tannins resolved, suggest you drink up.

Faiveley Dinner at Marea 11/10/2011 (Marea): Bricking ruby. Nose is pure '88: strict, sour cherry, horse sweat, interesting. Brambles. Palate surprisingly soft, but also tannic and masculine (paradoxically, though this being Burgundy, all things are possible…). Medium length. Later on, nose full of herbaceousness. Weightless palate. Nose now evolving to lacquer. Angular palate and finish. B+, but really striving for that A-.

(Faiveley Joseph Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley) Medium-pale ruby red. Sweet older nose of complex red fruit and wood. There's also a fabulous burst of fruit on the palate. Despite good acidity and tannins, nothing seems to be melding together all that well - nice parts but not a team performance.
(Faiveley Joseph Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley) Lovely deep ruby colour, just bricking a little at the rim. This looks younger than many a 1997. Nose – what nose? then oops: can that really be creosote? The note is halfway between creosote and corked, floating over a sweet base. It comes through on the first part of the palate too - such a shame as this wine is big bodied and exceptionally long in the background. Just in case this was some type of devilish bottle stink I vacuvin'd it overnight. Next day we still had creosote, just a little more subdued, but not much. Tainted

Charleston Offlineorama V; 11/7/2019-11/10/2019 (The Holy City): I am generally not a big fan of this wine, but this one showed pretty well. Rustic, somewhat monolithic but still quite tasty, with a pleasant bitterness on the finish.

Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): This was a funny one in the line-up, but I liked it. Much more green and a bit of barnyard and herbal notes and all of that. This evolved some through the night and I found the difference in it a bit refreshing.
