Garagiste

(SIFFREIN Cotes du Rhone Villages) 2007 Rhone Dear Friends, This just came across the wire and it was a pleasant surprise. After nearly a dozen bottles of this wine since last summer, the no-frills/honest approach Saint-Siffrein has captured is certain to brighten your summer picnic plans and beyond. It bursts from the glass with freshness and even I can’t deny their 2007 Cotes du Rhone Villages would challenge many at twice the price (Chateauneuf-du-Pape included). While I certainly admire their 2008s (as noted a few days ago – I’m in the minority on 2008), the 2007 vintage excelled at the lower levels and it elevated a relatively unheralded series of Cotes du Rhone wines into a quality league that has only come around a handful of times since the 1970s. At their current prices, common sense rings the wine bargain buzzer and it’s tough to have enough wine like this in your cellar. The result of a superlative growing season and selection – this is Saint-Siffrein’s top Cotes du Rhone, given the “Villages” designation - the remainder is sold off or bottled as regular Cotes du Rhone. For (at this very late stage of the 2007 game), your Tuesday night with frozen pizza (or something more adventurous) will thank you. In addition, this wine would have no problem as the star of an important occasion meal – it’s that versatile. Made entirely by hand, this is a 2007 I have no trouble recommending as the alcohol is in check and the fruit and terroir are the focus. With most “Villages” designated CdR’s from 2007 in the $15-18 range, this wine is a steal by comparison: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for no-nonsense and confident reflection of the Southern Rhone (it’s also a terrific value) ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance: 2007 Domaine de Saint Siffrein “Cotes du Rhone Villages” - FIRST COME FRIST SERVED at this price up to 36/person until we run out To order: niki@garagistewine.com This wine is set to depart the cave – it will arrive in the late spring (please check OARS for local pick up in mid-May).
