  • Earth and manure, unlike the last bottle this one really needed some time to open up to life.

  • **Fully resolved and fully Bordeaux. I have a hard time parting ways with wines like this from my cellar. The whole 1982 stamping is so mysterious and sexy and has delivered so many mind bending wines over time. I go back thinking that it will never die. Unfortunately, I think that soon we will be at a point when these will be far prettier to look at than drink. This is where wine becomes art.
Meanwhile, cedar chest, fine barnyard and old books, melted red fruit and a soft cedar laden and caressing finish that only a historic Bordeaux can deliver. I am willing to close my eyes to the frailty of the finish because I love these so much. The wines of 1982 and 1989/1990 are still the most beautiful specimens of Bordeaux, but fading. Drink!

  • Inevitably there is bottle variance with some 1982 wines, but this was singing, and is the best I've tasted to date. Fully resolved with secondary and tertiary notes, it is liquid velvet on the palate, with old leather and blackcurrant, with violet notes underpinning the wine. With this bottle the finish presented fully integrated with perfect balance and a silky finish without any of the bitter notes found with my previous two. My bottles were all purchased last year by auction with unknown provenance. On this bottle's performance I would hope with a reputable case that this should be at this level most of the time. 95+

  • Horsey funk nose that you would expect for a 41 year old Montrose. Quite a powerful profile with intense darker fruits with leather and tobacco notes. Still a good dose of structure and acidity which nicely balance the sweeter fruit profile that you expect from 82s. This fell nicely in the middle of the 83 Mouton and 83 Gruaud Larose: more masculine and less elegant than the Mouton, but not as rugged as the GL. In a great place but this can go for years.

  • 1982 Bordeaux theme, Flight 1 with Grand Puy Lacoste & Beychevelle, cork good shape, lovely mature Claret, cigar box, savoury, good fruits left
