  • Wine has aged into a light mahogany color with a yellow tinge on the outer ring. The first nose bursts forth with dark candied cherries - almost cherry cola in nature. The second nose offers additional nuance. Notes of gamefowl, sage and thyme coalesce with the initial cherry. Reminiscent of duck breast finished in a port Demi glacé and Luxardo maraschino cherries. The attack continues to barrage with cherries but more cooked and less fresh, evolving into its savory components evident in the bouquet though far less present. Has lost that herbaceous character in the mouth. Tannins have softened considerably and mouthfeel is silky with a short finish of chocolate and leather. Medium body with light to medium acidity. Despite an intense cherry nose, the wine did not offer the complexity I normally see in a Chambertin at this level. 92

  • From 75cl, perfect cork, opened but not decanted 1 hour. A week after the previous TCA-ridden bottle, what a relief to open a good one. Looks like a mature Burgundy should, bright with some auburn reflexes. Initially rich, sweet, plummy scent (2 hours after opening it became more animal and consommée-like) with depth, purity but little complexity; medium-bodied, silky-smooth entry with lowish acidity and delicious fruity sweetness, a bit like Burgundy for fans of mature Chateauneuf. The finish gew longer as the wine opened up; for my palate the last drop was the best. "Charmes" describes this perfectly, "Chambertin" less so. I was glad to have served it to accompany Wolfram Siebeck's chicken with morel mushrooms recipe; anything more powerful (venison? pigeon?) might have been too much. Delicious but hardly stellar, probably the best that could have been achieved in the vintage and in this appellation. Mature now, no hurry. 91(-92P)

  • From 75cl, decent cork with deep crevices at wine end, branded 0710 MS. Initially this wine was just odd and boiled-sweet-like, but after 30 minutes the TCA with which the cork had so lovingly infused the wine over the past decade blossomed into a cloud of offensive, nausea-inducing evil.
    Quick stocktake: price paid at the Domaine (cellar door) in 2010? 68,40€ Current auction value? 164.64€. Storage for the last 10 years? Perfect, bottle never moved. The contents of this bottle? Undrinkable. Alternative solutions? DIAM, screwcap, glass stopper, sourcing (and using) better quality corks. Or perhaps Tetra-Pak? (Joke.) Additional cost to the producer? Perhaps maximum 2€ per bottle, at this price level not really a significant factor. Anyone who can name me another standardized consumer product at this exalted price which is still regularly packaged so inappropriately (and with such arrogant disregard for the consumer), seemingly without any consequence for the producer, gets an invitation to share my remaining bottle of this expensive brew, which will hopefully be in better shape.

  • Joyaux en Côte de Nuits (Marsannay/Gevrey-Chambertin) - Les Grands Jours de Bourgogne (Maison de Marsannay): Tasting. Earthy aromas to start with a sweet, spicy character. Black and blue fruit on palate with good herb flavors coming through in the middle. Moderate power and length.
