  • The nose on this wine is so beautiful. Classic st Julien. But the palate needs some time to develop. After 4 hours decanting it was still tight. Needs another 5-10 years to find its full groove. But a beautiful wine with tons of potential and still enjoyable now.

  • I don’t know if it is bottle variation, or any problems during transportation or storage, this bottle just does not show very well tonight. The nose is reductive, closed, and the tannin is grippy and bitter. The wine is so tight and only changed little after 14-hr decanting. Very backward comparing to other 2009s I’ve tasted. However, you can still feel the finesse and elegance behind the curtain of tannin. I’m looking forward to taste it again maybe 5 years later.

  • A Burg-guy’s eye view of Bordeaux (with grilled lamb)

Rich. Chocolate and blackberries with ample balancing acid and gritty tooth-gripping tannins. 85% Cab/15% Merlot, 13.5% Alc.

This is excellent, a steak wine to rule them all and years of development to go. Even a Pinot person like me can like this one. The welcome spine of acid and tannic grip keeps this ship on an even keel. All that said, I must not be wired for Bordeaux because I’d take a well-made OR Pinot or 1er Burg any day of the week in place of this pedrigreed Cab blend.

That said, I have a few more bottles to sample down the years (in the name of science), and um, I’m not selling them.

  • Tasted blind over the course of a day, the 2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou really dazzles. This example is still a hair reductive but it's obviously pretty, full of griottine and pencil, slightly floral, cedary, and saline-filled. I love the soft fragrance of the nose and the fullness in the mouth is matched by a wonderful energy. There's both plenty of 2009 vintage character and terroir specificity, the latter perhaps tempering the potential excesses of the former.

  • Vintage Wine - Bordeaux Tasting 11/11/23: 13.5% ABV. Deep ruby core, garnet rim. Decanted for 2.5 hours.

Blackberry, cassis, black plum, violet, cigar box, nutmeg, clove, hint of barnyard. Beautiful acidity gives an ethereal and silky mouthfeel. Plush, round tannins. Finish seems endless.

This is a profound wine and Ducru has put on an absolute masterclass in balancing elegance, complexity, richness, and depth of flavor. That “iron fist, velvet glove” thing that people like to assign to wine - insert that here because this is the poster child of that. This is starting to hit its stride now, but has more evolution and decades of runway to go. 99-100 point potential.
