Brick edge. Nose has leather and faded fruit... I would guess Barolo. The palate has leather, tar and then strawberry fruit. They feel is velvety with a firm finish. I really enjoyed this even though it is not what I expected.
Impromptu Tasting with Friends (Ann's): Intense cherry nose. Sweet cherries, soft tannins in the mouth. On the finish you first notice a good amount of acidity. When that recedes candied cherries remain. I really liked this pinot, but others in the group preferred the Aston. This wine still has a little life left.
Bright disc. Light to medium garnet robe with orange rim. Clean nose, showing (60 minutes after decanting) moderately intense plum, cocoa, raspberry, dust and briar notes. The wine is medium-bodied on the palate, with high (excessive) acidity, slightly hot alcohol (labeled as 14.5%) and medium, slightly dry tannins. The flavors are similar as for the nose. Medium finish, which is slightly hot (alcohol), tart (acidity) and dry (tannins). While this showing is better than 2/28/03, the wine is still somewhat disappointing (considering its steep price). I doubt that this wine will improve with further time in the bottle.
Bright disc. Light-to-medium garnet robe with orange rim. Clean nose, showing light plum, smoke and meat aromas. Medium-bodied on the palate, with medium chewy tannins, high acidity and similar flavors as for the nose. Medium, slightly sour finish. Somewhat of a disappointment, although reasonably enjoyable.
