Eric's Birthday at La Vigna: classic notes of chianti. fully mature - drink now though no rush. Middle took about 30 min to open up - was a bit hollow at start but filled in. black fruit, touch of earthiness, excellent finish of herbs and spices. Amazing with food. Just a classic example.
This was a bit more dry (less fruit) compared with the previous bottle consumed 1½ years ago. Mature nose with red currants, licorice and some dust. Layers of cherry, tea leaves. Good acidity and still a tannic grip. Good with food.
Italian wine dinner at home: Double decanted 2 hours in advance. I was surprised at how good this was in the context of some of my favourite italians. Very dark, it has a maturing nose with meat, iron, dust and dark cherries. In the mouth it is tannic, firm and fine-grained in a distinguished way, showing very little sweetness yet with cool deep fruit. The aftertaste is refined and long. Incredibly good. Seems like it will keep forever.
