A perfect wine to celebrate our first warm day of Spring. Initially only a hint of petrol on the nose - white fruit dominates. On the palate, definitely at the lighter end of the auslese spectrum, and less sweet than I had expected, but this wine was in great balance, making it a perfect aperitif tipple in the sunshine.

Light golden colour. Lychees and lime on the nose - maybe best described as the green Starburst sweet?!! The palate is so refreshing, with the expected burst of acidity clearing away all sweetness from the lychees and pineapple fruits. Reasonably long, it improved with some air. No sign of old age yet, this is still fresh and delicious.

So I ask Dad if he wants a drink. Usually he says “rum and coke” but today he surprised me when he said, “Ya, some wine”. Ok, Dad likes sweet NY wines from places like Lake Niagara or Widmer so I thought I go with a 1997 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese (MSR) as it retains the sweetness that he likes but pumps up the volume in complexity and balance a few orders of magnitude. Lots of creamy orange, pineapple, and apple with a refined sweetness and well balanced acidity. I really enjoyed it (a lot) but the best part was that Dad really liked it (and so did Mom). The bottle disappeared quickly. 7.5%abv, AP 26 98.

Dinner at Charlotte & Joe's House (Berkeley, CA): Very expressive nose with telltale petrol and red berry aromas. Light and deep at the same time, with a long, penetrating minerally finish. Great juice, drinking so well today.
