Ap: dark ruby red Ar: sweet strawberries and barreloak Full bodied, and as most aged riojas; nicely balanced. Too prominent oak character even after 13+ years. Good length
Can probably live for quite a few more years.

This is a seriously dark wine. It gives me a whole new reference-frame of darkness and inky blackness in a wine. The cork is the darkest I've ever seen on any wine-bottle, but since this is my first Gran Reserva, that could be the way it always is with these wines. The nose gives me a pleasant and balanced feeling at first, but after a couple of hours it turns into a lot of blackcurrant and cabernet-ish fragrances. Still pleasant and balanced, but a bit more boring. They say Tempranillo is a lot like Cabernet, and it sure feels like it on the nose of this 85% Tempranillo wine. The mouthfeel of this wine is one of balance, concentration, slightly overpowering oaky tannins, a long finish, some alcoholic heat and a fat body in the middle. Much like a snooker-player. A pleasant one...
The problem with this wine is that it gives me little to be exited about. I miss complexity and different changing aspects of taste. This feels like being hit by a freight train. The wine keeps going and going, but only in one direcion. For all its concentration and drive, it gives me nothing new. It drags me along into blackcurrant-land, and I'm not sure that's where I want to be...

A true crowd-pleaser, the wine has abundant and mature fruit wrapped in a lot of new oak, with the toasty vanilla aromas driving the nose. It feels like a new-world wine and it is very easy to drink and quite food-friendly. But with such a fruit-forward profile and so much new oak on the nose, it is difficult to catch any secondary aromatics, which makes the nose and the finish feel a bit too simple. The palate is very well balanced, though. Drink now and in the next 5 years.

Terroir-istes International - Spain, Rioja (Rodwell House): Inky-black with a sawdust-led nose and aromas of soaked dark fruits, hay and orange peel. The palate feels dry with a ferruginous quality. Full-bodied, the wine is all about the oak, with spices and hasn't the wealth of fruit one would expect. Good vibrant acidity but no core. All ellagic tannins on the finish. Underwhelmed, expected more.

Great rioja. Heavily oaked of course, but carries it well.
Pleasant cool fruit, fine texture and acidity.
Good lenght.
Highly drinkable and mature.
