Light yellow color, initial nose was quite tight, hints of grapefruit and minerals, more like a Chablis than a Meurault. After an hour this wine really opened up, gained weight, a creamier texture and rounded into a lovely full framed Lafon. Impressive size and scale on the palate. Plenty of life left, no sign of premox, yeah!!!
very good condition; extremely balanced bouquet and palate -- mineral, spices, buttery cream, lemon, citrus, pear, apples; 20s+ finish; it kept developing upon open and still evolving after 4 hours; it's the best Lafon Gouttes d'Or I ever tried; way much better than 2004
The wines of of Comtes Lafon, with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): A touch closed on the nose to begin which developed more of an oaky character as time went on. True it is fatty and round on the palate but seemed to be lacking, especially for a 2002, and disappointing. Or was it that it came right after the brilliant 1986 clos de la barre? 90-91 from us but with a question mark.
Alcohol :: 13% Light golden, still very young as the color suggested. This has lovely bouquet of nutty complexity: almond, hazelnut with toasted vanilla oak with sweet core of melon, pear and lemon. Ripe and rich yet remained fresh and uplifting with sea breeze and light gingery spice. Medium - full bodied, still rather tight but you know this wine pack a lot material and what it needs is time to blossom. With time, it reveals more mineral and yellow fruits complexity intermixed with mild herbs and floral perfume. Persistent length, lingering with pear and mild spiciness. Delicious. 91-92+
