| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 38 notes) | | | Tasted by LWI on 12/28/2009 & rated 84 points: Mature and dark color. There is good fruit and some secondary aromas, but all of its merits are overshadowed by the oak and makes for a very dry finish. I had hoped that its heavy oak would be integrated after a while. Not yet, though. And I sincerely doubt that it ever will. (336 views) | | | Tasted by numcwrt2 on 11/28/2009 & rated 94 points: Formal notes not taken. Pulled as a back-up to the corked Montisoli. (499 views) | | | Tasted by GlennK on 10/29/2009 & rated 92 points: Let slow-o for about 5 hours prior to serving. The nose was a bit muted at first but came to life after an hour in the glass to show nice blackberry and spice notes. Good concentration on the palate with more dark berries and a very smooth and long finish. Really tasty now but it’s still holding back a bit and could really blossom with a couple more years in the cellar. (622 views) | | | Tasted by vinole on 9/12/2009: South FL WS Forum Offline (Hollywood, FL): Unfortuately, the cork on this was saturated nearly to the top, and this bottle appeared oxidized and did not show well. Was drinkable, offering some rather tart cherry flavors, but the normal rich layered fruit was missing and the wine just fell flat. (931 views) | | | Tasted by Mark on 7/25/2009 & rated 92 points: Very nice, a deep garnet color with a rich and nose. First thirty minutes were a bit acidic, but it opened up after that. Ideally we should have opened it for over an hour prior to consuming, it just got better with added weight with time. Medium length finish. Drinking very nice now but still has time. Tasted July 15, 2009.
Decanted about 6 hours. Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of wet stones, berries and a bit of fertilizer. Falvors of berries, cherries and reaspberries. Medium to bright acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink or hold. Not sure it was showing as well as it could because of the extended decant so withholding a rating. (1197 views) | | | Tasted by markjanes on 7/6/2009 & rated 88 points: Reddish brown rim, dark color. On the nose plenty of dark, macerated cherry, oak spice... quite savory. On the palate dry, high acidity, a moderately full midpalate, firm, ripe, integrating tannins and a hint of a dull, flat, metallic feel towards the end. Good balance, moderate + length, intensity, and complexity. The next day the wine was still drinking well with less of the dullness at the end of the wine. A well made wine which tends towards the internationally styled end of the spectrum... approaching peak drinking window. (1188 views) | | | Tasted by Cahill on 6/6/2009 & rated 93 points: Opened about 3 hours before dinner (grilled rib-eyes), and decanted 15 minutes before (significant sediment in the bottle) - we each had a glass with dinner, and finished after putting the kids to bed (which took a while, they were pretty dirty). Nose was delightful, it had both a freshness and a meatiness to it, with hints of licorice and menthol. Dark cherry fruit on the palate, with more meatiness and scorched earth and tobacco on the back end where the tannins start to kick in. Very fresh in the mouth, with a bit of lively acid up front with ripe tannin behind. Style definitely seemed in between for me, some sweet fruit, but plenty of earthiness as well. I am happy with this one, loved it with the steak, and loved it some more later. I hope when I open my other one the same result doesn't occur. Hints of Caisis and earth on the nose with dark fruit, tobacco and expresson on the palate. great mouthfeel and long finish (1643 views) | | | Tasted by Wrighty on 11/23/2008 & rated 93 points: Dinner with pjaines (Pjaines house, London): This had a little funky nose after decanting but it faded. Quiet a reserved wine, giving little but giving on drinking. Some dry earth, a little smoke/tobacco. Palate had a fresh balance to it and still has the backbone/structure for a longer life. (1754 views) | | | Tasted by JPwest on 11/8/2008 & rated 93 points: My guess is that the winery bottled from more than one barrel or source....as there is no way the bottle I just had was an 87 ....as in Parker score. Much closser to 95 from WS. I got lucky and others did not....too bad!! (1735 views) | | | Tasted by JPwest on 11/8/2008 & rated 93 points: Decated for 90 minutes. Wonderful sedcutive nose of earth, tobacco and bramble with good fruit ...showing that still perhaps room for improvement. Forst bottle lto be drained of the evening...always a good sign. (1722 views) | | | Tasted by patwjr on 10/3/2008 & rated 91 points: Sweet aromas, medium weight, figs, earthy, smooth finish. Still some tannins & acid present for aging, but this one is a drink now. (1762 views) | | | Tasted by markelln@bellsouth.net on 9/19/2008 & rated 92 points: Dinner Party at Home w Roberta&David Errenreich, Cindy&Jorge Gonzalez, and Jeannie&Gus Vidauretta (1915 Brickell Avenue, C1507, Miami, FL): Decanted for an hour to allow brett to dissapate. (Reminded Gus, that this was an earlier vintage of the wine he had a few months ago at Al Moro in Rome when he called me and asked me to tell the waiter whcih wine he was supposed to order - the 01.) With decanting this was = to the Uccelierra, perhaps more flavorful with more upside potential. (1821 views) | | | Tasted by Lorien on 3/30/2008 & rated 90 points: exactly what Claudio161 said. on the word (2441 views) | | | Tasted by Kdawg on 3/15/2008 & rated 91 points: a night of brunellos (My house): nose: very interesting nose of smoke tones, blueberries, game notes, floral tones with slight flavors of compost tones, cherry, black currant, and flavors of clay. Really dense nose that changed a lot in the glass
taste: nice and silky, but not nearly as deep as the nose with cherry, smoke, wild game, floral tones, and a bit of blueberry
overall: a really interesting wine. It changed a lot in a short time and is very elegant, but the finish doesn't bring as much and the mid palate is a bit thin. While possesing some really interesting characteristics, there is a bit lacking that turns this into a amazing wine (2593 views) | | | Tasted by Claudio161 on 3/15/2008 & rated 90 points: March 2008 Chicago WL Offline Brunello di Montalcino Event: - Tasted as part of the Chicago WL Brunello Offline Sight: Dark wine, somewhat cloudy (discovered later to be the oldest wine of the evening) Nose: Bretty; Smoke; Natural Gas (Mercaptan); Wet Dog; Fungus of sorts; Slight Cherry notes; Fruit was muted; Then as it blew off .... fruit started to be more predominant; Slight gaminess; Flowers or floral notes at towards the end of the taste; Sneak appearance of Blueberry as well Taste: Blackberry; Black Currants; Silky; Smooth Overall: Most interesting wine of the evening; Odd wine of sorts; Sybil-esque personality in the wine - it really kept changing on everyone! Still a good wine, just weird/surprising. Overall 90 points (2513 views) | | | Tasted by Eric on 3/1/2008 & rated 94 points: Utterly on point. Drinking quite young still but starting to show some secondary brilliance. Tobacco and balsa explode from the glass. Lifted, soaring aromatics. This dances on the palate as well with fantastic acidity, earthy and dry but with brilliant notes of cherry fruit. This settles in with earthy, powerful, persistent notes on the finish. Rather classic in overally personality but with enough sweetness to the core to hint at some international styling. Really gorgeous showing. I wish I had more than the 1 bottle left. (2810 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 11/23/2007 & rated 93 points: Wonderful, still early. (2995 views) | | | Tasted by wineaustria on 11/22/2007 & rated 96 points: For me this was surprisingly good! Great nose long finish - drink now! (3011 views) | | | Tasted by LWI on 9/4/2007 & rated 89 points: Quite dark, with a little browning. Medium length and medium body, some structure. Good+, but nothing spectacular. (3278 views) | | | Tasted by Anonymous on 5/18/2007 & rated 90 points: Agree w/ Duchamp...lovely and well-balanced but fading quickly. Not as big as other '97's. | By Lyle Fass Rockss and Fruit (1/4/2003) (Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino "Tenuta Nuova") Great nose of licorice (red and black), earth, mint, red pepper, black cherry and smoke. Dry stone aromas develop after a while. Full and meaty on the palate with tremendous purity and concentration. Long finish with thouroughly ripe tannins. This is very enjoyable to drink and will age very nicely. | NOTE: Scores and reviews are the property of Rockss and Fruit. (manage subscription channels) |
| The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino. Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.
About red wine
SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-veh-zeh"). Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
