Drank side by side a 2016 John Riddoch. Awesome to see how the two wines can develop over a 20 yr period. Smooth and surprisingly no sentiment for a 27yr old wine. Overall earth characters dominating and fruit disappearing. Still a nice drop but probably towards the end of its life. Drink up.

An incredible colour. Forget being deep purple, this was almost black. The bottle was served blind and the person who kindly shared it thought it was past it’s prime when he popped the corked as it was quite funky, no fruit, and quite acidic, but wow, give this a little time and it really transformed. This really worked with fatty grilled beef as standalone was a bit tannic and sharp, but everything balanced out with time and the food. At the darker end of the fruit spectrum and I actually called Aussie Shiraz. So close, but no cigar. Has nice tertiary notes now and suspect it’s time to drink up. From JY

Bob's cellar. Fine garnet red, clear and no bricking at all (magnum). Nose is sweet black forest fruits, with background layers of black pepper and tannins, redcurrant too. Dry opening, powdery tannins and redcurrant fruit, definite black pepper notes, clean and fine, does not seem aged at all. Post decant, and enjoyed in the New Year celebrations, lots of red fruits. Next day has dried out, dried black fruits but no vitality, fruit from last night has completely disappeared, replaced by austere mochas notes. Is fragile, and whilst last night was good (possibly rating an 89), opening and exposure to air creates a wine without longevity so ultimately a much lower rating. If you have this, drink reasonably soon, and decant but finish up quite quickly after that.

This was a lovely and savoury wine, with some depth and complexity. Certainly, one of the top Australian Cabernet Sauvignons.
Been aged perfectly from day one, the first thing to note is it needs a lot of time to open up so a 2+ hours decant is essential for this wine.
Very oak dominant upon opening, coconut and creaminess revealing a heavy finger print of American oak or heavily smoked French oak. Good news was this disappeared after an hour so one can actually experience the wine. Still dark red, the nose had a blend of cassis, earthy and savoury notes, dark plum and graphite. There is lovely and clean fruits on the body with nicely weighted structure. Tannin was well integrated and certainly, it is very fine right now. Finish was lingering long with a touch of violet.
Drink now or 10+ years. To some degree, it is still on the young side.
