  • From 75cl, perfect cork. Decanted one hour for fine powdery sediment. No, HonestBob isn't going to draw the polite veil of "flawed" shame over this bottle. On opening it was fizzy and violently acidic, 3 hours later it was flat as the back tyre on your bike when you're 10 miles from home on a hot summer day. Somewhere inbetween there was some sharp, red-fruited action and a surprising degree of sweetness (Monsieur Chaptal, so glad you could make it!) After a year in which I'd almost forgotten how capricious and downright sadistic-nasty PN could be, due to the fabulous German Spätburgunder now available (with strict selection) at each of the 10/20/30/40 EUR price points, here is a real bastard of a Burgundy "Grand Cru", a wine of which I had an exqusite 93P bottle as recently as 21.09.2019, but today resembles 75cl of cheapo New Zealand reject-swill: i.e. not entirely undrinkable, but absolutely not what you want to accompany venison on Christmas day. No excuses, this bottle contains average-to-good-to-drinkable jug wine, and was a real con-trick at 50 EUR back in 2010. 82-84P(?)

  • From 75cl, exquisite cork. This seriously needed an hour in the decanter, not least because of the necessary separation from substantial micro-fine sediment. Continued to open up over 2-3 hours, last drop the best. Intense morello/redcurrant/cranberry scent (those are the high notes to a balsamic undertow; kaleidoscopic with beef extract and the faintest hint of soy sauce and dried mushroom); piercingly (but ripely, digestiblly) acidic, skinny entry; dancing, featherlight mid-palate with growing beef extract notes; medium-long wine-related finish with an adorable back-kick of sharp horseradish; very long, slightly numbed-tingling, ethereal "resonance". Beautiful wine given enough time now, surely good for 5+ years despite all the Cassandra calls about 2008, but not sure it will improve. 92-94P (the lower mark refers to the drinking experience, the higher mark to the after-glow, which could make me – not a gnostic soul – believe in the supernatural...

  • Initially a bit of gas, that can easily be whirled out. Overt cranberry/red cherry nose with nice sandalwood and hints of spice but otherwise not oaky at all. Lovely generous juice, slightly sweetish, with great freshness thanks to the high acidity and the hint of co2. Totally open for business or pleasure in a cheerful, almost semi-carbonic style. Perhaps not a long ager - but what is there to wait for?
