ABV: 14.0%. Upon opening, there's a robust nose of roasted Mediterranean herbs mixed with savory, gamey, and meaty notes, which slowly dissipates the longer it breathes. The acid is noticeable and there's still some grip from the tannins, but there's plenty of fruit underneath. At 18-years-old, this Brunello is still very young so if you're planning to open a bottle soon, decant it for at least an hour. Otherwise, keep it in your cellar for at least another 5 years.
9/5/2023 - Raised the score by three points. 24 hours after opening, this wine has opened up and balanced out. There's a core of red fruits on the nose (think raspberries, dark cherries, red plums) surrounded by the roasted herbs. The tannins have softened and the acid is better integrated than yesterday, lifting the abundant fruit. There's a lot of potential in this wine and I'd most likely rate it even higher once it's ready to drink so I suggest keeping your bottle until the 25-year mark (2030).

This one probably deserved something a bit more serious than the carry-out pretzel crust pizza my son was craving. But I was curious, so why not? It showed some substantive blueberry and plum notes on the pop-n-pour. Seemed to be fading a bit a half hour later, but I thought there was some rhubarb emerging? Does Sangiovese do rhubarb? Now 60 minutes in, here come the plums again. The tannins are still closer to "chunky" than "silky", and it's certainly not "tired" but neither is there a whole lot of nuance that feels ready to blossom with more cellar time. All in all, though, it's a solid respectable bottle. Drink now, or next year, but probably not 5 years from now.

Some red fruit with coarse tannins and still a bit drying, held up for 2 nights.

It's time. Aged nicely. Dried cherry and baking spice on the nose and palate. Shows an earthiness with integrated tannins.
