This wine is at its peak. Beautifully rich and balanced with no signs of the hot season. Paired with leg of lamb and alongside a 96 Leoville las Cases to give 9 people adequate wine and let them decide which wine paired best with that dish. As it turned out both wines were appreciated and enjoyed and both paired well with the lamb. Preference was evenly divided with 5 liking the Ech more and four preferring the Leoville. In general, the older, more experienced drinkers preferred the burg while the younger (20-30 somethings) preferred the Bordeaux. I frankly liked them both, thinking the Leoville was perhaps a better wine but enjoying the Echezeaux more with the lamb. Finally, the Grivot will likely stay at peak for another 3-4 years whereas the Las Cases will easily go 20 more.

Gathering at Paul's: Guessed 2005 old-school Vosne. Masculine, powerful wine that was laden with spice notes. Thought 2005 because of the ferocious tannins and richness. My favourite red of the night (before it was revealed!).

Slow oxed for an hour, bottle & cork in pristine condition, dark, v good nose, range of red & black fruits with ink, coffee, elegant & fairly light in the mouth, v refined tannins, for sure in its drinking window 93

Nice wine that was okay out of the bottle with some tannin showing on the finish, and with more air over 2-3 hours was showing dark fruits, concentration, and although a very good wine not a typical Burgundy given the vintage and didn't show its best tonight. B+/A-

This was pretty approachable right out of the bottle. It improved with about 30 minutes of air but was enjoyed over a 3 hour period for its dark ripe fruit, concentration, and long finish. Tannins are there, but more integrated then the '03 VR Beaumonts we tried a couple of months ago. No question it is a 2003, but it is a really good one and fun to drink if you are ready for that style. Should hold up for a while, but in its window now. A-
