Brilliant Syrah from Carlisle. Probably the third James Berry I've tasted, and didn't disappoint. Concentrated. Dark and brooding. But the fruit is light on its' feet. Needs to be paired with something big and rich. Easily match with a big piece of grilled meat. Purple flowers, anise, spice, and big blackberries crush with stone mortis and pestle... it's big and rich, but I didn't find this a fruit bomb on the order of an Auzzie Shiraz. You can define the fruit in this Syrah. Could easily go longer in the bottle, but ready to drink now.
Carlisle In The OC: Been a while since I had one of these. I stopped buying syrah that lies south of the Santa Lucia Highlands, as I just find the wines too large for my tastes. Wasn't sure what to expect here but I'll say this went well with the polenta sausage dish we paired it with for the flight. The food really pulled out the blue fruit in the wine. There is also purple flowers, mint and what I thought was some heat.
