  • 4th bottle of 6, and probably the best yet with notable balance and elegance. Best after about an hour of air, then holding well through the last glass on the second night. Equally good on its own and with pork tenderloin one night, spaghetti and meatballs another. Early to middle drinking window based on this bottle, with many more years of fine drinking to come. 94-95+ if scoring

  • big bold red; a bit more blocky and less nuanced for a wine with this much age on it; but a very well made super tuscan that still has good fruit, good acidity and probably not going to get a lot better

  • Hamilton Blind Group: [Tasted Double Blind] This pours medium ruby, not really any bricking to speak of. The nose is lightly expressive with modest complexity. Aromas are of fresh cut pine, ripe plum, ripe blackberry, dark cherry, gravel, green pine needles, and violets . The palate enters on ripe plum and dark cherry turning to quite a structured mid-palate. Medium plus tannin that feels quite oak driven, with medium minus acid. The finish closes on bitter fennel seed, some new oak, and plum. The alcohol pokes out a tad on the finish indicating somewhere around 14% or more. Overall the finish gets clipped by bitterness and astringency. My guess on this was a modern, over extracted, and over oaked 2005 or 2006 Bordeaux, perhaps St Emilion fitting this mold most cleanly. I was surprised and disappointed on reveal to see the 2007 Saffredi which I've had twice before. In my early wine drinking days a decade ago loving this, and not writing a note about 4 years back where I believe I found it difficult but with redeeming characteristics. In this tasting I wasn't a fan. I think my palate shifted since those early days.
