  (GOURT DE MAUTENS) 2007 Mautens Dear Friends, There’s been a wall of buzz surrounding this wine for over a year now and it’s been like pulling teeth to acquire (even for those of us that have supported every vintage since inception). I finally have our meager 2007 allocation and, if the hubbub is any indication, the 2007 Gourt de Mautens should prove to be one of the most anticipated Southern Rhones of the vintage. While acclaimed in past years (you can look up the WA verbiage), it appears that Jerome Bressy was just getting warmed up and the 2007 has a chance to be the most critically swooned over example ever produced in Rasteau, even superior to Saumade’s 2007 Fleur de Confiance (which sells for $75-100). If the Parisian sommelier circuit is any indication, the organically produced 2007 Gourt de Mautens is in even greater demand than something like 2007 Pegau – the problem is that so little exists (which brings up our supply/demand charts – you can do the economics exercise)... Here is a consensus TN from a group of top palates in Paris (from yesterday and tasted again today after 24 hours of air – I just got of the phone with them): “2007 was the first vintage Bressy did whole cluster fermentation. 28 months of ageing in foudre and demi muid. Bottled by hand with nothing taken away, nothing filtered. Very deep inky color. Black fruit and sandalwood in the nose. Very ripe blackberries. Some red fruit notes (red plums). Deep nose, lots going on here – you want to dive into this. A fruit bowl of black fruits. Hardwood sideboard, noble and aged. Tannins are present, but not at all aggressive. Minerality and acidity gives a wondrous edge to it. Sweet fruit, a bit of a new world quality to it, but without being heavy or over-extracted or over-ripe in any way. Black-cherry plum jam. Some dried fig notes. North African spice. Lots of concentration (lots of spices!) but doesn't show any heat at all. Brown spices. Wow. The assemblage is 70% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 15 % Mourvedre, Counoise, Syrah, Vaccarese” Ok, now even I'm intrigued. Without belaboring the point (or points?), I wouldn’t be surprised if this wine received eye-popping numbers upon release. While that’s not the only reason you should consider the wine (it appears to be impeccably made) the sheer fact that it is so hard to find has to be a consideration - if you are a collector of micro-production Rhones, you may want to roll the dice here (well in advance of the reviews).
