Early Mar 2024, Rheingau Gourmet Festival, rarity diner “25 vintages of Chateau Montrose”: according to the sommelier double decanted for up to 3 hours; clear dark red color; noble bouquet of cassis, cherries and minty aromas; round, well-balanced texture; medium acidity.
Modern version of the classic claret. Pairs excellent with roasted poultry and fried pigeon.
A birth year Château Montrose for me, I was really excited to open this up. It did not disappoint. The nose was captivating, giving hints of great integration as I found there to be a great balance of balsamic, black cherry and tinges of earthy funk and vanilla. The palate, though, was quintessential Bordeaux wrapped up in a body that felt far more mature than 1998. While there was still a lot of fruit there - namely black cherry and blackcurrant - it felt as if the bottle was at the apex of shifting from dark fruit to red fruit. The mid-palate introduced a lot of the tertiary notes that I was expecting as I recorded notes of smoked pepper, cassis and leather before the lingering, silky finish brought upon graphite, forest floor and mushrooms. This is going to sing for years to come, but was in a great place on the night. Very classic Bordeaux.

Tenth bottle from a full case purchased at auction in 2007. Pristine bottle, perfect label and cork, level into neck. Not decanted, opened three hours in advance. Consistent with my previous notes although the fruit is perhaps more youthful than in previous bottles, more blackcurrant than crushed red berries, also with some blackcurrant leaf in addition to the gravel, cedar and lead pencil notes. A very fine bottle.

Good wine with some stuffing. But vintage may be better on the right bank overall.

Perfect bottle. It drank so well. No signs of age either in color or taste. Really fresh and classic Bordeaux. Lasts at least another 5-10 years.
