Very consistent with my previous note, but this time the floral character soars from the glass immediately. The tannins remain very dominant but they are very fine. This is a much better wine than the Rinaldi alongside. It shares the ripe balsamic character and massive tannin but is much fresher and more aromatic.

Intensely aromatic cherry leathery nose with earth, camphor and meat. Smoked meat? And roses, after a while. Or is that violets. Really aromatic. Lots of alcohol in this wine but I don’t find it as intrusive as I did last time I had this. Rich and integrated on the palate, tannins very present. Savoury. Really long on the finish with mouth-puckering tannin and acidity. A power wine, and the tannins are noticeably more chunky (without being excessively so) than more recent vintages, although this is still a very tannic cuvée.

Rather overwhelmed by alcohol on this showing. On a previous occasion I noted that it improved a lot with air and then food so perhaps that’s what’s missing here.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #046: Barolo (By PS): Earth and chocolate, sweet spices, tobacco, tea and rust in the bouquet. On the palate chocolate, earth, coffee and laurel. Ok acidity and bitterness. A tasty and very mature wine. (The person who brought the bottle, opened another one the weekend after and that bottle was much fresher and less mature, so this evenings’ bottle was probably an off bottle. So no score.

(Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice) Dark cherry red color with pale meniscus; appealing, dried berry nose; tight, tasty, dried berry, mineral palate; needs 7-plus years; medium-plus finish
