Not up to the usual La Cote Rousse standards. This seemed tired and lacking vibrancy. The fruit was muted and seemed to get softer as the night went on.

P&P. Very much a classic La Cote Rousse, full of dark cherry fruit, intermingled with savory sprinkles, and the trademark Betz tarry note. It seemed very young and full of life, which I would have guessed this was 3 to 5 years of age vs. 12. Which further adds evidence that while WA St Syrah doesn’t seem to really evolve with extended bottle age. To be clear this is no knock, the quality is and always has been there from Yakima to Red Mt to WW and everything in between. But after a few years of settling in, they more or less take on their adult form and stay in in this mold throughout. A recent 07 Frog was an exception to this hypothesis, wild and feral when young, blossomed into elegance and complexity with 15 years under its belt. All this means for me is I don’t need to buy more than 2 or 3 bottles of cellar worthy WA Syrah and enjoy over the first decade give or take.

(Betz Family Winery La Côte Rousse Syrah Red Mountain) Perhaps the most compelling of the stellar set of new releases, this 100% Syrah is full of floral notes, mineral notes, smoke, and dark fruit. The palate is taut and full while retaining an incredible freshness and vibrancy. A tart, fruit-filled finish. 51% Kiona Ranch at the End of the Road, 49% Ciel du Cheval vineyards. Aged 12 months in French oak (50% new). 14.8% alcohol.

This bottle was a little flat at first, but really started to open up with an hour of air. What a treat!

This was holding up well and improved a bit with some air. Still pretty dense.
