Base neck fill. Cork was saturated almost all the way, and broke off while being removed. Immediately decanted, then drank over the course of 2 hours. This was awful for the first 15 or 20 minutes, then improved for an hour, and a great 20 minutes, and then started to slide. Extremely complex: at various times I got aromas of earth, crushed leaves, wet pavement, cigar, leather, herbs. The fruit gradually came out, and it was a mostly red fruit profile, red currant and cranberry and maybe ollalleiberry, if you've ever had one of those. There were also flavors of earthy crushed rock, and that nice aged-wine umami savoriness. As time passed the wine got more and more tannic, until in the last 15 minutes the velvety tannin was overwhelming the fruit. While tasty and complex, for me the wine lacked a bit of purity and definition that kept it from making it to that next level.

Medium red color, slightly bricked. Started out with musty aromas and a nasty finish but both went away with air. Seems more adolescent than in late middle age. Savory consistency, on the fuller-bodied side. A mix of dark and red fruits, with notable cranberry, that gains prominence with time. Goes down easy but the tannin remains notable.

92 for the nose (very complex and rewarding) , 88 for the taste (acidic, faded fruit, slightly unbalanced)
