  • German Riesling from 1971 to 2012 (Los Gatos, California): Deep yellow. Flower, honey, and peach. Medium body and Auslese level sweetness. Rich, spicy red apple and stone fruit. Short in acidity, some soil at the end. I wasn't crazy about this.

  • #22-04, 7.5% abv. The Prüm sponti is here in spades; I won't call it reduction anymore because it really isn't reduction. There's a sweetness to the nose here, coupled with the sponti that reminds me a bit of jackfruit. The fruit profile on this wine overall is actually quite strange. It doesn't have any of the typical Mosel fruits, and instead veers to low-acid tropical fruits like jackfruit (or even durian, sans stench). This is an incredibly creamy edition of Mosel riesling (and made more so by the typical creaminess of the vineyard). Very low acid, but this is ethereal and floats on the palate. A very atypical bottle as far as Prüm (and Mosel riesling) is concerned, but delicious nonetheless.

  • The 2003 has a richness to it that's evident on both the nose and the palate. Great match with the spicy fried chicken and sticky rice.

  • The Prüm Dinner (Chicago, IL): #22-04, 7.5% abv. One of the big takeaways from this evening was that Prüm did exceedingly well in what one would consider "off" vintages. This had a bit of mustiness initially, which did blow off. A very ripe and rich bottle of Spätlese that could almost be called Auslese in another vintage. I did think this was lacking a bit of acidic zip, though the sheer intensity of the extract was fantastic.

  • AP 2 576511 22 04; Premier Cru Wines, Oakland, CA, $40/750. Five-ringed cork-finished. Double-decanted with considerable carbon dioxide yet at opening. Bright green-yellow, a little too deep in color for type; highly refractive; sheeting quite thin.

Teasing aromas of ripe peach; a nicely polished wine. Some scents of slightly bitter smoke. Good clarity; nice simplicity, and a creamy caramel note. Juicy sweet apple finish with hints of umami and a gently salty minerality. Holds well in bottle overnight. A very ripe hot-year wine with ripe skins only moderately extracted, so therefore it's fully mature, but will hold a few more years. Nicely made given the challenges of the vintage year. Drink now through 2018. (92 pts.)

I'm stunned that my view of this wine is so different from that of Mosel Fine Wine's. Are we tasting the same juice?

Trinity Church Troy Annual Vestry dinner, followed the La Piazza lasagnas (meat or veggie) with my savory (four cheeses) course--English cloth-wrapped cheddar; Reggiano, Comte, Mimolette, fig paste--cheeses especially appreciated by our young pre-teen waitstaff who ended up taking home with them the remains that they had enthusiastically chopped up. Gelato and dark chocolate cookies for dessert. Other wines--2009 Banfi Chianti Classico Riserva; 2010 Banfi Pinot grigio; 1985 Taylor Vintage Porto.
