At home with Margherita pizza, last tasting 2015...in my cellar from shortly after release. One of those "forgotten bottles", thought it was time (maybe past) to get another one open. PnP, very soft cork, broke on way out.
Dark garnet core, separating at the edges. Nose showing, dark fruits, herbs, garrigue, violets. Palate of blackberry, boysenberry, blue fruits, savory, spice/cloves, herbs, vanilla. A lot going on...blackberry thought the mid palate, some heat persists into the finish. Full body, long finish.
Hitting all the classic Syrah/Shiraz notes. Nicely aged, elegant, rich and "savage" Rhone profile. High alcohol is the notable flaw at this point. Very good now, was probably better in its first 10 years ...Would drink up, not likely to improve from here.

Our last bottle of this vintage, still have one '02. Still dark garnet, opaque, now with slight browning at the edges. Very complex syrah aromas, some elegance. Beautifully balanced, round dark fruit flavors, but not a "fruit bomb". This has aged well but is near the end of its plateau and should be consumed soon. Ric

Fruit forward, blueberry syrup, sweet, slight sweet herbs, rich but tingly finish with slightly older stewed berries notes. This was mysteriously appetizing. Taylor's Steak House Dirty Dozen dinner.

It was well worth the wait. I had three bottles; one I had within a year of purchasing (uneven but with great promise) the second last year, promise fulfilled and the last one this month. Excellent balance, smooth, robust with a a great finish.

You know when you keep holding on to a bottle so you can savor it on a special night or when you're really in the mood and then when you finally do open it you realize you waited too long? Well, that's what I did that with this one. I don't know why I held it so long, always finding a reason to hold off. But alas, it should have been opened 5-10 years ago and enjoyed much more than now. All the warm luscious fruit has faded. Good bones still left, but it has dried out and is missing all that I had loved in this wine in the past. What did I expect at 16 years of age? Foolish. Lesson learned in disappointment. Don't wait too long on those bottles you are looking forward to drinking my friends. Carpe vinum!
