Caramel color. Complex aromas of sweet tea, molasses, Brazil nuts and brown spices. Rich, beautifully structured silky fruit in the mouth with great depth and acidity and a very long finish. This wine is not as intense or powerful as the 1850 Verdelho and is a little closed at this time, but it has the bones to develop into an even more fabulous wine with another 6 to 12 months of bottle aging.

I just opened this one this morning at 10AM (hey - it's Sunday!). Decanted it and am setting it aside for a few weeks to open up, but had a small glass to try it out. This is a stunning wine. Color - medium caramel with red highlights. Initial nose of green apple, black walnut and orange peel. Intense citrus flavors, bracing acidity. It really wakes up the mouth. Salted caramel, quinine, lime and orange peel.
Will be interesting to see how this develops as it opens up. Will update later.

Great stuff. Prob worth 93 points for flavor and another 3 for the fun historical conversations. What was going on in the world when these grapes were hanging on the vine...

Madeira @ The Modern: Homage to Mario Barbeito (NYC): Bottled in 1990. Probably sourced from the North coast (Ribeira da Janela). Purchased by Mario Barbeito during the founding of the company. Medium tawny in color with a garnet/greenish rim. Brown spice nose, spice cake flavors on the palate. Soft, pillowy texture, yet not flat or dull -- quite a bit of energy and drive in this wine. An elegant, svelte wine. Very good.
