Interesting experiment, to try this against the '04 Guigal Ampuis. In many ways, I liked this better. Opened on 1/9, and it was lean and green, with black pepper notes. Good, but a little weak on the finish, and disapointing compared to other wines I've had from this producer. On day two, this gained a little weight. Still had that slight veggie thing, but for my palate it wasn't a flaw. This will probably be one of those love it or hate it wines for most people, because of it's Syrahness, but I think it's quite that value for what it offers. Day 1: 87 Day 2: 88-89

Black-purple. Simple and pure violet, pepper and cassis nose. Sweet black fruit palate that offers admirable purity and finesse. This is intensely flavored but not at all heavy. Tannins are soft and the overall impression is one of simple grace rather than power. Violets and earth on the finish. An excellent intro to northern Rhone syrah. Great value.

I was disappointed with this wine's overall performance. The nose, taste and finish were off, and I assume I waited too long to drink it.
