This is far too New World in style for me and, next to the 80 and 85, the 09 Clos de la Roche seemed stylistically dissonant. Sappy, high toned red cherry and red currant with an acidic tang. There's plenty of of substance here, but in a broader context it seems all wrong.

From Magnum. Very deep ruby. Helped to open these mags so it could have a couple hours in the decanter as it is a massive wine. Was very closed when first opened. Very hard to get much off the nose in the first couple of hours and couldn’t stay for dinner so hoping the bday boy and his guests benefited from further time in the decanter. Ripe, blue and black fruits, clearly ripe but balanced but just monolithic and a bit uncharming. Palate is beautifully balanced, lots of substance but again, impossible to discern and separate any complexity from the material. Great length of ripe and healthy fruit.
Clearly not close to ready in this format so better to drink the 08, 07, 06 and 04s before this monster. Feels like it years away from being ready for business. Will be interesting to follow but those with bottles in cool cellars should not approach the wine at the moment as it will be disappointing in the context if you are looking for a magical bottle for immediate enjoyment and consumption.

This had the tell-tale red fruits, was quite juicy as well, but a bit lean (even for '09), and very mineral on the palate (which I like), but sandwiched between some other very good wines at the end (pity) and therefore notes are minimal. DD at Cotsen's. 92-93

Tasted blind. Not a big Ponsot fan as his wines are often burly and overripe.. This one was completely different despite the warm vintage. Hey presto! Here we have an elegant wine, crisp and racy with raspberry, earhty scents and spices. Light on its feet. Great showing. 95-96
