Vinetasters: Brown Bag (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Inky, dark, and thick, and tons of black pepper on the nose. Must be Californian syrah. Some licorice, vanilla, and brown spice, this is really heavy and dense. Sweet and extracted with somewhat surprisingly soft tannins. Thanksfully, this is not too oaky but is still far too fruity for my palate. Good for the style but it is something I would never buy or own.

Delicious! Nose of dark fruit, some secodary notes. Full bodied but not overly so. Tannins still present, but great balance and finesse. Long finish. Great stuff!

Cotes du Rhone, A few treats and WS Game 1 (Jeff Kings): Purple in color. Gorgeous nose. This wine is still youthful. The nose has a bit of earthiness, black raspberries, plums, violets, sandalwood and a touch of bacon fat. On the palate, plenty of tannins left. A lot of fruit. Juicy, lush texture. Very deep. Vibrant fruit. Long finish. This still needs air or time, but it was delicious and just fantastic. Still, I think it has a bit more upside to it. A real treat. Thanks Jeff.

A total very elegant stunner! The 2005 Special Bottling Syrah from Bien Nacido vyd is amazing tonight. This is very close to becoming a 'Grand Vin'. There is a ton of lovely fruit adjoined by kirsch, cinnamon, cranberry and fresh cherry. Adding to this is an overall level of complexity which is certainly appealing. The palate adds to the overall experience with balance, vocal yet integrated acidity and a massive elegance. Yes, this is a ripe and perhaps also 'full-bodied' wine, but it behaves like a gentleman. Very very good... (score is 98+)
Tasted in a flight with 2005 Colgin IX Estate Syrah, 2005 Ojai Special Bottling Bien Nacido Syrah, 2005 Noon Shiraz and 2005 Kaesler Old Bastard Shiraz.
