  • It's been a while since I've had a Tempranillo, but it just didn't have enough fruit to hold my interest. Definitely not worth the price or label.

  • PnP. Sensory coterno. Clear temp initially moving up to high 60s room temp.

Distinctive rocks nose with some notes of dark fruits. Very nice palate through the end of the mid palate. But on PnP there is a bit of a bitter finish. With a little air the fruit gets a bit sweeter and begins to take center stage.

I had low expectations here because of ex rays recent notes. I still prefer the Rhone varietals. I am not sure I get the Tempranillo here. But this was still a very enjoyable wine. It just has a disconnect for me given the grape. But if tasted blind I would easily identify this as Cayuse or at least Rocks, and then say it was quite good.

On ex ray's notes, it does make me wonder if those bottles were off -- or perhaps our tastes are dramatically different (and I suspect this is not the case, or at least not enough to account for the different experiences with this wine).

  • I will echo my note of two years ago: "Not as impressive as last time three years ago. Still dark and opaque but more one-dimensional aroma and flavor. Won't get better. May have been a slightly off bottle, since last time it was complex and great."
Actually, I don't think it was an off bottle, but rather a wine prematurely past its peak. This current bottle was one-dimensional, moderately tannic, and lacking much aroma and flavor. I think it's just past its peak. My last '09 and glad of it.

  • Only slightly better than the '10 Widowmaker Cab we had side by side. It had all the lovely Tempranillo fruit, but none of the edge, structure, tannin, or support. For this kind of money, give me an A rated Ribera del Duero or a B rated Rioja. Also, had an '09 Gran Reserva next to it for comparison sakes. Not saying the Gran Reserva was better, but it was more complete Tempranillo than this was. Fall 2020 Ex Cellar Acquisition.

(Cayuse Vineyards Impulsivo En Chamberlain Vineyard Walla Walla Valley) An aromatically intriguing wine with tobacco leaf, mineral, cherry, and exotic spices. The palate is soft with a layer of tannins underneath the fruit. 100% Tempranillo. 210 cases produced.
