Opaque red-purple, dark fruit with brambly notes, medium-bodied, still sweet and lively, and completely gulpable initially. Though it gets heavier and sludgier over time. The days of 15% are happily in the rear view mirror for us-not that we didn’t enjoy this as it went down, but the heaviness ends up being less appealing as the evening goes on.

Thanksgiving 2023 (Dogwood Grove/Rock Spring, Virginia): Not sure what to make of this wine since it had a distinct barnyard element that was either offputting or sophisticated. Notes of old leather, dried blood orange, meat, and blue stewed fruits. An interesting glass of wine, but I didn’t reach for a refill.

Monthly Tasting Group: Rhones (Noyes and Cutler, St. Paul, MN): Just got a little taste of this at the end of the night. Kind of fun to try after the vertical we did the Monday before. This was better than in the past. Things are still flashy and ripe with blackberry and lots of dark fruits, spicy garrigue and dried herbs, but it has settled down now and is more on track. Impression was 91-92pts.

Well, we were finally able to reschedule a birthday dinner (3 weeks late) with some friends in NYC. I brought the magnum to be served with the main course which was Roasted Duck Breasts. I opened the bottle when I arrived and we started drinking it around two hours later. The nose was all fruit and I was fearful that the wine would be lackluster. The palate was a different story - dark cherry, cassis, sandalwood and a touch of spice. The finish was moderate to long and smooth. 92+
