  • 10% alcohol.

Deep syrupy to mahogany brown color with a reddish bronze rim. Very powerful, unctuous and quite lifted nose with aromas of diethyl ether and paint thinner, lots of bruised apples, some gingerbread and Christmas spices, a little bit of espresso, light raisiny tones and hints of caramel and burnt sugar. The wine is lifted, full-bodied and quite volatile on the palate with very viscous and oily mouthfeel and noticeably concentrated flavors of lemon curd and orange marmalade, some oxidative nutty tones, a little bit of balsamic VA, light spicy notes of gingerbread and Christmas spices, a hint of steely minerality and a touch of burnt sugar. The wine is moderately high in acidity, which keeps the balance somewhat in check, but doesn't really offer much balance to the oily mouthfeel. The finish is very long, sweet and sticky with powerful, complex flavors of Christmas spices, orange marmalade, some gingerbread, a little bit of steely minerality, light caramel tones, an oxidative hint of roasted nuts and a lifted touch of VA.

A very complex, incredibly concentrated and - for its age - surprisingly developed Trockenbeerenauslese. There's a lot of going on here and there's a lot of it too, but in a tasting of 1990's sweet wines this was one of the youngest wines we tasted yet it tasted probably the oldest. Overall the wine feels quite tertiary and although it might develop from here before starting to go downhill, I'm not entirely sure if the wine is actually going to get any better from here. It really doesn't matter, because it is pretty great right now. At times the volatile character becomes a bit too dominant, making the wine taste more like nail polish than dessert wine, but otherwise it's terrific. A distinctive and delicious effort.

  • Quite dark appearance. The nose continues on with the dark theme, with honey, melon, quince, coffee and some burnt sugar notes as well as some volatility. The palate contains some weight, with some more burnt sugar. It is about just matched by the acidity. Long finish.
