The bouquet of this wine is really fantastic. Complex and with lots of beautiful spices, cassis and elegant luxurious oak. On the palate spiciness as well, coffee, some sweetness and silky soft tannin. Good acidity. Day 2 the little leftover showed signs of oxidation. A high score because the bouquet is a feast and on the palate everything is beautifully integrated. This bottle was really at its peak now, but I don't know the history of this bottle. If it is representative; do not wait too long before drinking this wine. It will not improve any more.
“ Yes “ is the answer . From my instinct, its style might be the big surprise in the last 15 years as same as Cheval Blanc 1982 did when released but nowadays all the wines of St.Emilion seem to have this kind of character.
Anyway, a nice bloody Merlot comes first, followed by the toasted oak, chocolate, espresso coffee and…you can imagine…The typical scent of 1994 vintage “ a hard edge “ makes this wine not as deep/clean as it should be.
2 hours passed by, nice wide-opened, getting more deep and clean in nosing. Quite full in body, expresses the vintage structure, aggressive and tannic that reminds me of Ausone and Cheval Blace 1994 as well. By the way, this is a delicious wine.
A nice robust aftertaste, dark chocolate finished. Compare with 1999, the 1994 got the higher score but the feeling is not.
Now I worry about my one case each of 2000 and 2001, are they gonna rock my world ? ....or not at all… Don’t give up on it…
