Summer 2016. Ordered off the list at Auberge de Cassagne together with '88 La Landonne. This proved to be most most spectacular surprise of the trip. The bottle was in perfect condition and poured out to reveal a glistening mid-gold. We decanted for 30 minutes and drank at cellar temperature. Everything I love about old Hermitage was present here. Beeswax, lanolin, almonds, honey, lavender, sous bois and a core of stone that went on and on. Shared with my Indian friend, we both agreed this was a highlight among many great bottles consumed over the previous few weeks.

The bottle condition was good, but the fill was low on the shoulder. The cork had some black fungus with oxidation around the capsule, but the cork was sound and extracted in one piece. The wine was marvelous - still bright, light gold color, beautiful aromatics and very complex. It had such presence and texture, but was somehow almost weightless. Very special.

Rare Wine Dinner (Sydney, Australia): Amazing lifted orange peel and apricot over the top of butterscotch, some oxidative nutty notes and quince. The palate is a highlight, it is tangy and has some grip to it while having terrific texture. Complex and fully mature, this is great stuff.

Chapoutier verticale at St John (London): Very fresh, deep nose. Nutty on the palate, fine and delicate. Toasted oak still perceptible. Very good surprise.
