 5/14/2006 (Brad's House)

A full weekend of graduation festivities, as Dale's daughter Megan and our son Kevin graduated from Macalester this weekend. We finally had time to enjoy some wine wine over dinner of salmon and scallops.

  • 1996 Louis Jadot Le Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
A great find at a local retailer this weekend. The nose was huge and wonderful. A bit reserved rather than forward on the palate, with pineapple, nuttiness, and some wood. Really nice. Short to medium finish. Still youthful, this is wonderful to drink now, but should hold as well. Overall, a great drink, ready now, that we would love to try again.
  • 2003 Meßmer Burrweiler Schäwer Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Pfalz
First in a trio of 2003 Rieslings, this was ready to rock and roll. Very forward and accessable now, so if you're looking for an 03 for current consumption, this fits the bill. Less developed and simpler than the next two, but very enjoyable.
  • 2003 Florian Weingart Bacharacher Schloss Furstenberg Riesling Auslese * #19 - Germany, Mittelrhein
Second in our trio of 03's, this was less appealing on the nose, actually quite gasoline for such a young Riesling. But wow, what a great drink. More focused and clearly more classy than the Messmer, this will be a great wine to hold but also drinks wonderfully now.
  • 2003 Schloss Schönborn Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheingau
And the hits just keep on coming. The third in our 2003 trio, this was the best. Like the Weingart, the nose was less appealing, but this was really fabulous. A fun tasting of some accessable 03's. This will get me out to purchase and cellar this vintage.
  • 1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Also found this at a local retailer this weekend for a good price, and they claimed to have had it in the cellar since release. Started out great, with a really strong and good RSV nose. But in the mouth this was flat and the fruit was underwhelming. There didn't seem to be any off taste, and the small amount of fruit you could get out of it was good, so we think the bottle was stored properly, but there was just nothing to get excited about. A disappointment versus any reasonable expectations.
  • 1995 Maison Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
No notes taken, but from memory less focused than expected, although enjoyable.
  • 1999 Louis Jadot Charmes-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
A pleasant surprise, this wine had great structure to go along with it vibrant, spice, berry fruit. Liked it.
  • 1976 Remoissenet Père et Fils Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epenots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Rather fat and unfocused, but still very alive.
