Chenin Blanc Blind Tasting |  (371 page views) | | | - 2009 La Grange Tiphaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Nouveau-Nez - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
Tasted Blind. Apple, a little leesy with a hint of minerality and smoke on the nose. While the nose is rather pleasant, the palate is not. Some heat, rich, lacking balance. Some bitter notes, pits.
Not a fan.
- 2010 Domaine du Closel-Château des Vaults Savennières La Jalousie - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Savennières
Tasted Blind. Exotic fruits both on the nose and palate. Round, rich with a touch of RS. To me it lacks acid and this is rather boring.
- 2010 Benoit Courault Les Guinechiens - France, Vin de France
Tasted Blind. Very smoky and mineral. Herbs and mint with apple and pear. Lemon as well. Different from other chenins with that lemony acidity and pear notes. Something a little harsch in the mid-palate but it really blossomed on the 2nd and 3rd day. Nice stuff.
- 2009 Domaine de Bellivière Jasnières Les Rosiers - France, Loire Valley, Jasnières
Tasted Blind. Beautiful nose with a rock water like note. Some RS. While the acidity is not crazy, it is in check with the sugar and balance the wine despite an evident chubbiness.
One of my favorite of the night.
- 2010 Domaine Ilarria Irouléguy Blanc - France, Southwest France, Pays Basque, Irouléguy
Tasted Blind. The ringer in our tasting and nobody thought this was not a chenin ! This was one of my bottle and recognized it but overall this was totally NOT out of place.
A lot of iodine notes, like smelling the sea. There's also a touch of rotten egg which blows off after a few minutes. Palate shows green pineapple, a touch of dried fruits and a hint of anise. The wine floats on your palate.
Very good.
- 2011 Domaine Huet Vouvray Sec Le Mont - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Tasted Blind. Right off the bat some green aspargus notes giving away the vintage. Some lime rind, smoke and apple. Acidity is kicking back on the finish along apricot notes. I struggled a little here with this wine as I did not find the transparency of Huet wines but this is obviously a very young wine.
- 2011 Un Saumon dans la Loire Montlouis-sur-Loire Minéral + - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire
Tasted Blind. A disapointment when this was revealed. I really enjoy Frantz Saumon wines but this particular bottle did not show well. Maybe an off bottle? This was flat, green and quite boring.
I want to try it again before making a definitive judgment.
Edit: I kept leftover in the fridge and it totally blossomed into a fabulous wine. Austere and very mineral on the attack, it is like sucking chalk. Then luscious chenin fruit (apple and a touch of pear) comes up on the finish. What a transformation !
- 2010 Domaine des Sablonnettes Le P'tit Blanc - France, Vin de France
Tasted Blind. Strong nose of pear eau de vie, waxy and honey. Not pleasant at all. Palate shows the same aromatics. You feel like drinking an eau de vie without the alcohol. Did not enjoy this at all.
- 2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Mont - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
Tasted Blind. Did not spend much time with this and just had 2 or 3 sips but I remember something very balanced, sesame seeds on the nose along honey. Will drink for a long time.
