3/14/2013 (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA)

  • 1994 Rabbit Ridge Nebbiolo Barrique Riserva - USA, California, Sonoma County
Darkest color. Cinnamon red hot candy nose. Black plum and cinnamon on the palate. Tastes young with lots of fruit left. (my 3rd, group's 3rd) (86 pts.)
  • 1989 Azienda Monsordo Bernardina (Ceretto) Nebbiolo d'Alba Lantasco - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Nebbiolo d'Alba
Moderately bricked. Strange nose, no fruit, some mint. Dried out palate, no fruit, some dried flowers. Over the hill. (my 4th, group's 4th) (79 pts.)
  • 2005 Novy Family Wines Nebbiolo Stolpman Vineyard - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley
Nice nose of cherries and roses. Mix of ripe and tart cherries, some black tea notes. Nice balance and a long finish. Clearly the wotf. (my 1st, group's 1st) (91 pts.)
  • 1993 Renwood Nebbiolo - USA, California, Sierra Foothills, Amador County
Bricked. Off nose, furniture polish and v.a. Leather, varnish, caramel palate. Oxidized. (my 5th, group's 5th) (FLAWED)
  • 1992 Il Podere dell'Olivos Nebbiolo Parabola - USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley
Strawberry nose. Sweet strawberry fruit, round, soft palate. Simple but still fruity and alive which was enough to make it second best in this flight. Others got brett, which I'm normally quite sensitive to but couldn't detect here. (my 2nd, group's 2nd) (87 pts.)
  • 2000 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco Rabają - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Pretty, floral nose, some baking spice. Cherries and anise with bright acidity. Smoother with less tannin than the rest of the lineup. Only one that's drinking well now imo. Really nice. (my 1st, group's 4th) (91 pts.)
  • 2000 Moccagatta Barbaresco Basarin - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Savory nose, sweaty, some tar. Medium to full bodied, tannic, leather, dried cherries. Promising but needs time. (my 2nd, group's 2nd) (90 pts.)
  • 2000 Moccagatta Barbaresco Cole - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Black fruit and tar on the nose. Tart cherry, prominent tannin, medium+ acidity. Lots of good stuff here but disjointed. Needs time. (my 3rd, group's 3rd) (88 pts.)
  • 2000 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Nice, sweet nose of strawberries and roses. Dark fruit, tight and tannic. Acidity is a bit shrill. Another one that needs time. (my 4th, group's 1st) (87 pts.)
  • 2000 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Loreto - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Weird nose, smoky, bretty(?), reduced(?). Weird palate, caramel, maderized. (my 6th, group's 6th) (FLAWED)
  • 2000 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabają - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Sweet, woody, smoky nose. Sweet dried cherries, sweet wood. An outlier in this flight. (my 5th, group's 5th) (83 pts.)
