| - 2008 Juvé y Camps Cava Gran Brut - Spain, Cava
Light and refreshing, apples and flowers, juicy, not really distinguished, a nice aperitif. (87 pts.)
- 2011 Terroir Al Limit Soc. Lda. Priorat Pedra de Guix - Spain, Catalunya, Priorat
Not an obvious wine. Quite powerful, not the usual explosive, floral aromatic profile of Grenache Blanc, apple, quite discreet, much more about structure and tannin, broad shouldered, has a very natural feel to it, an interesting experiment but I am not sure that I am really impressed. The price tag is frightening. (89 pts.)
- 2011 Jiménez Landi Méntrida Pielago - Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, Méntrida
Bright and youthful Garnacha, ripe fruit (cherry, strawberry, peach and pear even), hint of garrigue, cheerful, noce weight but does not suffer from its 14.5% ABV, soft but lively, ripe tannins, pure flavours, good length. (89 pts.)
- N.V. Bodegas Tradición Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Oloroso Muy Viejo - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Slightly cloudy, orange gold. Bone-dry, rich, intense, clean, linear style, nutty and mineral, lively, candied fruit, powerful acidity, floral topnotes, great intensity and length. (94 pts.)
- N.V. Emilio Hidalgo Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Oloroso Seco "Villapanés" - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Much smoother and silkier than the Tradicion that preceeded it. It lacks a bit of definition and precision, it is honeyed and rounded, but with some salty, austere minerality to prove its age and breeding. (92 pts.)
- N.V. La Cigarrera Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda Oloroso - Spain, Andalucía, Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda
A very odd style of Oloroso, vegetal, nutty, caramel, honey, cream, salty oaky minerality, good length. (91 pts.)
- N.V. Valdespino Palomino Fino Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Amontillado Coliseo VORS - Spain, Andalucía, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry
Not as concentrated, acidic and forbidding as I remember from some 15 years ago, from before the sale of the bodega to the Grupo Estévez, perhaps they didn't add (as much) PX back then? Bone-dry but rounded off by a buttery texture, deep and woodsy, intense and powerful, salty minerality, austere but not extreme, flowers and lovage, wonderful flavours and length. Excellent wine, but a bit too friendly now for my taste. (94 pts.)
