5/21/2015 (The Grill Room at Capella Hotel Georgetown)

Seven of us got together to drink Burgundy.

Champagne

The Krug showed really well.

  • 2000 Dom Pérignon Champagne Rosé - France, Champagne
Relatively lighter and very mineral driven Dom rose. Medium nose displaying a hint of cool red/yellow fruits, strawberry and raspberry essence, copper, a hint of caramel and white pepper. Medium concentration, shy red fruit driven palate impression, medium acidity and fine mousse. It is drinking well. (93 pts.)
  • 1989 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut Collection - France, Champagne
Beautiful full body champagne that clearly expresses the Krug collection style, ie decadent sweet yellow fruits, exceptional concentration yet fresh and no noticeable oxidative note that Vintage Krug often shows. Lovely bright yellow color hints very fresh example. Expressive decadent sweet yellow fruits, golden delicious, lemon curd, light honey, ginger, a hint of brioche, smoke and limestone. Exceptional concentration, dense yet precise, decadent sweet yellow fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and lovely long sweet finish. Drinking exceptional well and perhaps at the peak but no need to hurry. (96 pts.)

White Burgundy

It was interesting to try the l'Ouvrée des Dames, very rare wine.

  • 2002 Lucien Le Moine Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
Just like D’Yquem, there is something magical about Le Montrachet and Chevalier Montrachet in that the wines display exceptional concentration and density without compromising freshness and concentration. The texture is to die for. Tightly coiled nose displaying intense yet cool yellow fruits, lemon, lemon curd, olive oil, mint, crushed white pepper, oyster shell and sesame/a hint of oak. Incredible concentration and density yet almost airy texture like a great D’Yquem, oil, perfect amount of acidity and very good but not great finish due to the oak clipping the finish a bit short. Hopefully another ten years of cellaring will further reduce the oak. This could have flirted with perfection if it wasn’t the oak. (96 pts.)
  • 2000 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc l'Ouvrée des Dames - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
One of those unicorn wine. Pop and pour, it feels like an intense version of the Clos des Mouches, deeply toned and mineral but pretty straightforward especially compare to the other wines in the flight. However with air, it really improves by gaining weight and mineral expression. Ripe deeply toned yellow pit fruits, lemon, slightly unripe yellow peach, mint, sweet spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, mineral and steely, sweet deep yellow fruit driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and lovely long mineral finish. Though not showing a lot of GC finesse, it displayed the perfect balance. Incredibly mineral wine. Started around 92 but ended up a couple points higher. (94 pts.)
  • 1992 Domaine Michel Niellon Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Incredibly youthful color with a hint of green. There is a hint of something off, TCA perhaps. Incredibly youthful nose displaying yellow fruits, lemon curd, smoke, oyster brine, honey and mineral. Perfectly balanced palate, beautiful cool yellow fruits and lovely long sweet finish. This closely resemble the 92 Leflaive Batard in that despite not showing much acidity, it magically maintain exceptional balance and precision. I noticed a hint of TCA in the beginning which bothered two other winos. If clean, I bet this would have been in the high 90s. It is interesting that one of Mr. FCLARITY’s bottle was also TCA tainted. (FLAWED)
  • 2007 Paul Pernot et ses Fils Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Not premoxed but very mature for a 2007 GC. Ripe yellow pit fruits, honey and mineral. Medium concentration, ripe yellow fruit, medium acidity and medium finish. It got fresher with air. Need a bit more freshness and precision. I have had great bottles from the 90s. Although I like the wine, poor QPR. (92 pts.)

DRC Cuvée Duvault-Blochet

I initially preferred the 02 but the 06 got so much better with air.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cuvée Duvault-Blochet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
This bottle is starting to browning at the rim. The nose starts with strong DRC stem note which need to a hint of green impression, sweet decadent red fruits, raspberry jam, flowers, a slight hint of soy and sweet Vosne spices. Medium concentration, lovely silky palate, mineral, ripe sweet red fruits, good acidity and finish. I initially liked it a lot but deducted a couple points towards to the end for not having vibrant energy. I wonder the stem inclusion was the right decision as the stem note is quite strong and a bit out of sync as the fruit concentration is not there. Further cellaring could help lessening the stem note but the wine seems to be close to the peak. If you enjoy the DRC stem note, you may enjoy this a bit more. DRC signature is quite strong and it is very enjoyable. (93 pts.)
  • 2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cuvée Duvault-Blochet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Pop and pour, the fruit seems a bit too ripe and no stem note. With air, this is become incredible delicious. Beautiful opulent nose displaying sweet red and black fruits, now noticeable stem which as nice complexity, sap, caramel, Vosne spice and strong presence of mineral. Excellent concentration, opulent sweet blackberry driven palate impression, bright acidity, nicely integrated tannins and seamless lovely finish. Displaying perfect balance and harmony. Very youthful but perfectly enjoyable. This improved with air where the 02 didn’t. (95 pts.)

Gros Richebourg

  • 1993 Domaine Anne et François Gros Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
The wine I really love. Unfortunately corked. (FLAWED)
  • 1998 Domaine A.-F. Gros Richebourg - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Not quite sure what happened here. The wine seems correct but the fruit is dry, plum and rustic. Very rustic palate as well. Good concentration. It seems correct.

GC Burgundy

  • 2001 Joseph Drouhin Musigny - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
This so beautifully demonstrates “An iron fist in a velvet glove”. Very precise nose displaying pure red fruits, raspberry essence and cherry, truffle, grilled meat, flowers and strong presence of mineral. Very good concentration, lean and precise, strong presence of mineral, just right amount of acidity, nicely integrated tannins and clean seamless finish. Quite youthful but more mineral than fruit driven. Very polished wine. (95 pts.)
  • 1999 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
The fruit is almost blue, blackberry and black cherry, lovely floral note, vosne spice and a hint of black truffle. Exceptional concentration, generous fresh dark fruit driven palate impression, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and lovely long finish. This is a youthful big scale wine that still needs time. It is really impressive and reasonably ready to be enjoyable. Love to taste this in ten years. (95 pts.)
  • 1999 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Musigny Cuvée Vieilles Vignes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
I believe Antonio posted a very positive report. Justin C mentioned trying six also bottles are all mediocre at best and often TCA tainted. This once again showed TCA like taint like the . Not sure what is going on. (FLAWED)
  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Corton-Le Corton - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
This is a pleasant surprise. Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe crunch red and black fruits, flowers, strong mineral presence, cremini mushroom and limestone. Excellent concentration, generous fresh crunch red fruit driven palate impression, bright acidity and long clean finish. This very youthful wine is very pure and mineral. It is really enjoyable but can still benefit at least ten more years of cellaring if you love sous bois like I do. Wonderful against some tough expensive competition. (94 pts.)
  • 2005 Domaine de Montille Corton-Pougets - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
This is a wow wine for me. Very polished nose displaying perfectly ripe red fruits, cherries and a hint of raspberry, sweet spices, cinnamon and mineral. Medium concentration, quite precise and refined palate, fresh red fruit driven palate impression, good acidity and lovely long finish. Really a pleasant surprise. I am not too familiar with Montille. This is so exceptional I wonder what the 05 les Malconsorts Christianne is like. I highly recommend. (95 pts.)

D'Yquem

  • 2001 Château d'Yquem - France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
This has to be one of the most perfectly balanced wines. Incredible intensity, sweetness, decadence, airiness, finesse, balance, harmony and finish. Just perfect in every way! (100 pts.)

Another great wine dinner that lasted five plus hours.
