Rudi Wiest Selections Portfolio Tasting | (346 page views) | 5/15/2017 (Chicago Athletic Association - Chicago IL) |
| I only had one hour, so had time to taste approximately 1/3 of the wine being offered. - 2016 Weingut Salwey Grauburgunder - Germany, Baden
Tasting, brief note. Apple skin and some candied lemon peel. Very enjoyable for its price and level, with a vibrant energy and finish. (86 pts.)
- 2016 Weingut Salwey Weissburgunder Gutswein Kabinett Trocken - Germany, Baden
Tasting, brief note. Also a great value wine, this Pinot Blanc is slightly richer than the Pinot Gris, with greater concentration, but slightly less vibrant and energetic. A very good summer wine. (85 pts.)
- 2014 Weingut Salwey Oberrotweiler Käsleberg Spätburgunder Trocken - Germany, Baden
Tasting, brief note. Bright red cherry, reasonably ripe, nicely fresh. Good overall balance. Probably a good value for approx $25 Pinot Noir. (86 pts.)
- 2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Spätlese trocken - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasting, brief note. Aromas currently dominated by yeasty notes that I am told will dissipate. Otherwise good fruit just behind that.
- 2016 Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasting, brief note. Apple and tangerine notes, all very nice, certainly elegant. Good+ length. Good value wine.
- 2016 Schloss Lieser Niederberg Helden Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasting, brief note. Also very reductive start. Orange peel and spice. Moderate weight, good balance.
- 2016 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasting, brief note. Forward and enjoyable start seems slightly simple. Picks up weight towards good finish. Good+ for its level.
- 2016 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
Tasting, brief note. Moderate sweetness, good concentration and balance. Ready now, but certainly cellarworthy as well.
- 2015 Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Pinot Blanc Dry - Germany, Pfalz
Tasting, brief note. Good weight and balance, lemon and lemon curd. Another nice everyday drinker.
- 2015 Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz Birkweiler Riesling Trocken - Germany, Pfalz
Tasting, brief note. Very good floral start with good fruit to follow. Good length, just finishes slightly harshly bone dry.
- 2012 Friedrich Becker Rechtenbacher Spätburgunder - Germany, Pfalz
Tasting, brief note. Big red cherry on nose and palate with faint spice. Good ripeness, yet slightly bitter on finish. (86 pts.)
- 2015 Rudolf Fürst Spätburgunder Tradition - Germany, Franken
Tasting, brief note. Pale red cherry start-to-finish. Ok overall.
- 2015 Rudolf Fürst Klingenberger Spätburgunder - Germany, Franken
Tasting, brief note. Lots of red cherry with savory spice and some emerging nuance. Good weight and length. Certainly good+, but slightly expensive. (89 pts.)
- 2016 Gunderloch Nackenheim Riesling Trocken - Germany, Rheinhessen
Tasting, brief note. Apple notes with some petrol to start. Almost searing dryness on finish. Moderate weight.
- 2016 Gunderloch Nierstein Riesling Trocken - Germany, Rheinhessen
Tasting, brief note. Much like the Estate just tasted, this starts dry and finishes drier, but here there is more weight to keep this balanced.
- 2016 Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Rheinhessen
Tasting, brief note. Very pleasant and well balanced, especially for the attractive price.
- 2015 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese - Germany, Rheinhessen
Tasting, brief note. Baked apple with balance, good length and a good sense of precision. A highlight of the tasting for me. (90 pts.)
- 2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Trollinger Steinwiege Trocken - Germany, Württemberg
Tasting, brief note. Very pale, very simple. Red for somebody who really wants to drink Rose?
- 2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Lemberger Steinwiege Trocken - Germany, Württemberg
Tasting, brief note. Very reduced. Simple red cherry nose and palate. Ok balance.
- 2015 Weingut Schnaitmann Pinot Noir - Germany, Württemberg
Tasting, brief note. Bright red cherry, good start through middle, then slightly firm finish. Easily the best of the entry level wines from the three red varietals from Schnaitmann.
- 2015 Meyer-Näkel Blue Slate - Germany, Ahr
Tasting, brief note. A clear step vs vs Estate Pinot Noir. While also reductive, this had better length and concentration.
- 2015 Meyer-Näkel Pinot Noir - Germany, Ahr
Tasting, brief note. Very reduced start. Good red cherry on palate, in a lighter style. Slightly bitter finish.
