1/25/2019 (Brasserie Margeaux - Chicago IL)

Tasting with Frederic Barnier.

2017s Mostly Barrel Samples

  • 2017 Louis Jadot Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Bright red fruit with spice hints and overall good+ balance. Will drink well young, perhaps not quite showing 1er Cru weight, but I expect that's the vintage.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Aux Cras Domaine Gagey - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Red cherries and berries throughout with woodsy spice. Bright and nicely elegant. Good weight and good+ length.89-90+ point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Guettes Domaine Gagey - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Lots of red cherry here, but the rugged tannins dominate for now. Slightly drying. 86-87 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. More black vs red fruit with big, chewy textures. Also showing rugged textures, but here I find everything close to harmony and good+ 89-90 point potential, 2025 forward.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Array of red berries that show both ripe and tart character along with roasted meat hints. Elegant for Corton rouge. Good weight and length, this will most likely pick up some weight and get closer to Grand Cru density that it is showing at present. 89-91 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Very expressive nose with black and red berries, plenty of floral support and a trace of new oak that will surely integrate soon. Already fun and forward and balanced, so surprisingly nimble and accessible for a young Vaucrains. 89-91 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Red cherry and berry start-to-finish with very good textures, especially to start. Firm, long finish will need a few years in the cellar to soften, but the wine unfolds and develops nicely at the end. Not a wine I often see. 90-91 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Roasted meat with dense black fruit that is less accessible vs most 2017s. Good+ length, good weight for its level. I liked this more from barrel at Jadot last summer, but still 89-91 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Charming cross-section of cherry aromas and flavors to start, that gets more dense and firm middle forward. Finessed start, powerful finish. This has gotten more intense but also brooding vs when tasted at Jadot last summer, but still 90-92 point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. A step up from Clos Vougeot just tasted. Bright array of ripe and tart red fruit with savory Asian five spice. Big and persistent with very good density already. 91-93 point potential, 2025 forward.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Moulin-à-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin Château des Jacques - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Moulin-à-Vent
Tasting, brief note. Lighter red fruit with some earth notes. Firm finish. Good overall, better in another year or two. (86 pts.)
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Morgon Côte du Py Château des Jacques - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon
Tasting, brief note. Bright red fruit. Good+ weight and length with energetic finish. Bigger, denser and fresher vs Moulin-à-Vent Clos du Grand Carquelin just tasted. (88 pts.)
  • 2017 J.A. Ferret Pouilly-Fuissé Les Perrières Tête de Cru - France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Lots of apple with floral and mint hints. Very good length with crunchy mineral textures. Very good 90-92 point potential but needs some time, 2023 forward.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Apple and lemon with good weight already and very good length showing exactly what you texturally want from Chablis. 90+ point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Blanchots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Charming start with apple, lemon, lime and floral notes. Almost fat to start, but more precise and minerally middle forward. Bright, energetic finish. 92+ point potential.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Santenay 1er Cru Clos Faubard Blanc - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Santenay 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Plenty of apple here. Rounded, rich start, then more firm and dense middle-to-finish. I liked this slightly more when tasted at Jadot last June. I will have to revisit once bottled and recovered from bottling, so late this year.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne Domaine du Duc de Magenta - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Ripe, rounded start with lots of ripe orchard fruit and orange peel. Fat start, mineral-flecked long finish with enough lingering fat. Very good 92-93 point potential. Almost as good as the Bâtard-Montrachet tasted next.
  • 2017 Louis Jadot Bâtard-Montrachet - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. From barrel sample gathered in October. Floral and spice driven start with ripe apple and baked apple. Less opulent on palate with a very long and dense finish. 92-93 point potential.
