A dark and brooding purple, this wine shows you what you are going to get before passing your lips. Full of pepper, rich plum and licorice, the red fruit is well complemented by a subtle splash of oak. The acidity is in balance with the tannins but one cant help but wonder if the finish could possibly last a little longer given the heavy front end? The pepper gives way slightly sooner than I would have hoped but all in all, a well structured offering from penfolds. Decanted for an hour before approaching. (1438 views)

Deep dark red colour. Pepper/spice at the beginning and gives way to leather and earth flavours. Plum and blackberry at the end. Would not say that this is bold up front but the flavours do round out and fill the mouth. Some green and red pepper flavours as well. Drinking well. (2779 views)

Otroligt bra vin som behöver många timmar för att öppna upp. För att vara en dålig årgång är den närmast fantastisk!.

Was okay but certainly not a stunner. Solid and typical Aussie Shiraz flavours. If conpared to a Two Hands or similar you can get more for the money. Would not buy again at this price range. Was pobably at the right spot to be drunk with a buffer of some more years. (3480 views)

Rich dark purple with very high optical density and medium reflectivity. Medium intensity nose, with straight-forward array of aromatic compounds, dark candied fruit (blackberry and cassis), and some light toasty spices, but really dominated by fruit. Very bold and big bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and a firm tannic structure that provides for a big, sensation, with a texture that is surly with just a touch of roundness. Very much a vigorous and assertive wine. Flavours are intense if simple, with dark fruits (blackberry, cassis, plum) and spicy notes on the attack. Well maintained at midpalate, but not much adding on, just more of the same spicy fruit. There is a touch of minerality and some saline quality trying to peak out, but it is masked by the ripeness and dominance of the fruit for the most part. The finish is of warm fruit and some mild spices and a warm alcohol burn, and is of medium length and intensity. Overall, a straight-ahead and powerful wine that is way more dominant than elegant.

While the balance is for the most part ok, there seems to be a dependence on ripe fruit to offset the warm spicy jam, and it could benefit from a touch more freshness to even things out. This means we find a unabashedly modern wine that is not so much about subtlety and charm as it is about trying to be a delicious cocktail. While I do sense a bit of the Syrah influence here, there is not so much varietal character as fermented grape juice here- which can be delicious to be sure, but there are a lot of wines like this out there made from many different varieties and in many different regions. If you like powerful, bold wines, then this Shiraz can be a winner, as it is not totally over-the-top, and is very enjoyable for its style. Would probably please a crowd, and is a great bottle for Cabernet lovers. A bit difficult to rate, as this is certainly above typical Shiraz for my palate, but it is not always my favourite style- it is more of a mood wine for me. So, I'll go with 91, as I do like it for those occasions- good thing my palate has a broad range! (6252 views)

A little too early to open but hell it is Christmas and my 2009's and 10's definitely too soon! Decanted for three hours and the very best part of this was the bouquet. Chocolate and plums mixed in there with a spicy overtone. Certainly detected a slight leafyness as have a couple of other reviewers. This became a little more apparent on drinking but the finish was good. Not the best St Henri I have ever opened but as I said earlier, the very beginning of the drinking window so should improve greatly. (5118 views)

A Matter of Taste: London Edition (Saatchi Gallery, Chelsea): I really love this cuvee and had not had the 2011 before. There was an enticing bouquet of grilled herbs, olives and pepper, with more spice, pepper, dark chocolate, toasted oak and sweet tannins on the palate.
