Definitely in worse shape than the previous bottle we opened last year. This one is quite rusty-brownish in color. Lots of iron and dried cherry on the nose. Not oxidized, but rather lifeless. Quite flat with very little fruit left. (209 views)

HAUNTINGLY excellent wine from Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Fill level: bottom neck.

Cork was so wet it fell to bottle, but I decanted through coffee filter.

Color: brick, very light, orange and stunning.

First nose: smoke, old wood, wet leaves, spicy pepper, like an old pinot noir.
Then the fruit hits: sour raspberry and velvety vanilla-chocolate.

Palate: initially smoky, peppery and spicy on the front then mid palate lingers with a velvety chocolatiness and the acidity is there, tannins are very soft. Finishes mid length at some cocoa/vanilla and spicy tones with a raspberry finish.

Great way to celebrate a birthday, I am truly lucky with this individual bottle, how well it was stored, how I got on auction for almost nothing and how good it tasted.

After about 30 minutes in the glass the wine faded, but it held in the decanter for the 3-4 hours we drank it, so every time we poured new glasses from the carafe, the wine was very alive.

My previous old Bordeaux experience was a Medoc from the legendary 1982 vintage, but this wine was truly something special. I almost feel bad leaving a "94 point" review, since it doesn't do this specific bottle nearly justice but it should give a guide to future buyers seeing a mid neck or bottom neck bottle with no signs of leakage.

Intensive Rote Frucht in der Nase, evtl. Pflaume. Im Mund fruchtig, wohl Kirsche und Himbeere, natürlich Vanille. Nach ein paar Stunden an der Luft aber etwas bitter, daher zügig trinken. (94 views)

Enjoyed while traveling in Paris over Christmas holiday. I recall the waiter repeatedly sniffing the cork😉. I assured him it needed a decant after being closed up for so many years. After the funk blew off it was an old world experience. I'm certain the waiter thought we were crazy for ordering a bottle this aged. When and where was I going to enjoy a Rothschild like this in the states for under $40? Fruit had faded yet the balance was still there. Sure it was at the end of it's drinkable life, but "when in Rome"... or rather when in Paris...cheers to Bordeaux! (205 views)

Nose: mint, shaved pencil, red fruit; great nose

Palat: cherry, graphite, pencil shavings, cedar black pepper; medium body; high- acidity; medium+ tannins
